Looking for help identifying this radio. Philips AM/FM Ontvangtoestel AFM4

Hi there, I hope you are all doing fine and being healthy.

Recently I acquired this radio but after days of browsing the web I cannot find the brand nor the model of it. The closest I got is the brand Wega, which has a somewhat similar style. E.g.: Wega Lyra 3D.

The tubes are marked ECC85, ECH81, EF89 (2x), EABC80, EL84, EZ80. The last one reads EM8?, which probably has a zero after that.

The front speaker is a AD3690M. Both side speakers are AD1700's.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kind regards

Hi there and welcome to the forum - I'm sure you'll find all the info you need here!

As soon as I saw the part numbers for the speakers I thought "Philips" - the style of the speakers and the IF transformers reinforced my guess - but normally Philips put model numbers and other info on the back chassis apron but nothing there other than those typed labels in French and English. The dial scales are in French and Dutch. The valves are Mullard who 'merged' with Philips, those 'push me pull you' bits of cord to rotate the ferrite antenna are typical too. Interesting that the VHF FM band only goes up to about 100MHz. Perhaps if you searched Radio Museum for those valves you might hit gold.

I agree, the mains transformer and the speakers look like Philips . Mick.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I haven't been able to determine the exact model or manufacterer.

Philips was my first guess too. But those rather peculiar pointy top corners throw me off all the time.

Yesterday the server of radiomuseum even blocked my IP for 24h because of too many requests made in a short time period. 8-\

It was probably made in Belgium, since it is in french and dutch, the two main languages of Belgium. The printings in the back are also both french and dutch, not french and english as majoconz suggested. Or at least it was made for the Belgian market. I aim at around 1955+ for a year of manufacturing.

All tubes except for the ECC85 were manufactered by Adzam, also a belgian company, with close ties to Philips. The ECC85 is in fact manufactered by philips.

The Fenno suggestion brought up some interesting results, but nothing close enough.

https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/asa_1135.html#a This one looks quite close, but no edges that are pointy enough.

Could it be that this was custom build? Or at least the casing, since the inside does indeed looks similar to Philips.

Have you tried asking on a French radio forum such as:-

The most likely place to find that mixture of languages is Belgium. However you must never tell a Belgian that he is speaking Dutch. Maybe French and Flemish.

Bell (Radiobell) has some similar models with that piano key flanked by edgewise rotary controls.

Re: Looking for help identifying this radio

Hi everyone, I was able to find the radio with the help of a dutch forum on vintage radio. Apparently this was a kit sold by philips in the mid 50's, with an unoriginal case.

You can find it here: https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/philip...stel_afm4.html

Have a nice weekend!
