Thumbs up HMV 1950s record player

Hi all,

I've just recently purchased a His Master's Voice record player like that pictured. The turntable doesn't work and I was wondering where can I find an owners manual or service manual if there are any.

Does anyone on here know anything about this record player?

Many thanks.

It's a model 2001A. The service manual is here:

http://www.service-data.com/product.php/2732/3747

The cartridge and stylus are OK I hope, as they can be costly if they aren't. The O/P valve is an N78, which lists 6BJ5 as an equivalent. You could get away with an EL90 I think?

The motor is ran from the transformer primary on a 230v supply and via SW2, which is operated by the pick-up arm. Push to the right to start. Check this switch.

Cheers,

Steve P.

I see this still has the original EMI "Double C" cartridge fitted. As Steve has mentioned, if it has packed up, it will be an expensive repair, as it will involve replacing the whole thing with something suitable. As far as I know, there is now nothing commercially available to do the job, so it will mean an imaginative conversion.
If, by lucky chance, the cartridge is still working, be aware that it is mono only, and must not be used to play stereo records, or it will wreck them.

I remember someone writing about dismantling and repairing the HMV Double 'c' cartridge. I can't remember if it was here (a search has not been successful) or elsewhere. Does anyone remember where this was written?

Cheers,

Another thing with these is the mains flex. I've got on here on the 'might get done one day' pile and live, neutral and earth are all brown! Might well be wise to change it....
