Default Linsley Hood low noise cassette deck. PCB with pot?

Does anyone know what the little board with the pot is for? It's on the right of the picture, mounted on the plate between the mech and the other boards - knob on the left in the third pic. It's not connected to anything! I just got this from a charity shop and have never seen one before.
