Thanks to forum member PMMunro, I have recently acquired a pendant telephone 246, along with a bellset 31. The latter is designed for use with a local battery for magneto, CBS or a long line on CB/auto.
Is it possible to rewire the bellset 31 to behave like a bellset 37, i.e. without the use of a local battery?

No, and yes. You have much more experience with British telephones than me, but I' believe that it will work with this circuit, but no anti sidetone circuit.

In the end I have wired it as a "long line CB/auto", with the transmitter energised by a local battery, as follows:
T1 -> B1 T2 -> B9 -> T6 T5 -> B3 -> T8 T7 -> B4 -> Batt+ T9 -> B2 -> T10 (via dial if present) Batt- -> B5 A leg -> B6/B7 B leg -> B8

For completeness, I should have included that T3 and T4 are strapped internally.
