Tried fitting this in my Roberts R303 but it seems slightly too big - scrapes against the two bolts at the top of the battery compartment!

What am I doing wrong??
BUMP

I have a Roberts R303 on my ToDo list but noticed that a new PP9 battery I bought from CPC doesn't fit - it's slightly too big and the two bolts at the top of the battery compartment prevents the battery from fitting in? What am I doing wrong, if anything??

I will of course start a new Roberts R303 Thread when I get round to restoring it but just thought I'd mention this in passing - don't want to divert the current Thread.

Have just checked the size of a B&Q/Screwfix Diall PP9 and it is well within the specification quoted by Mike in the previous post. As mentioned elsewhere the remaining PP9 battery brands (which seem to be Panasonic, Ever Ready Silver and Diall) are probably all made in the same factory anyway so it seems unlikely that battery size is the source of Donald's R303 problem. I don't think Roberts' manufacturing tolerances were very exacting back in the 60s/70s and fitting a battery to one of my two R505s in particular is a fiddly activity.

Try rotating it 90 degrees?

There is a cut-out for the connector:

Of course that's the first thing I tried.

I'll take a picture tonight and post later.

I worked on 303 a few months ago and I also noticed I had to squeeze the battery in as it fouled on the protruding bolts, mine stick out quite a bit. Giving the battery cage a squeeze against the case on the speaker side prior, helped it slide in better. I can post a pic of mine tonight if needed

Hurrah - it fits ...!

A bit of wiggling about and some loss of paint from the battery as it scraped against one of the bolts going in (circled RED in attached picture)!

The Roberts 303 is number three on my ToDo list so will be a making an appearance in a new Thread in a couple of months - you have been alerted!

Getting things back on track - the new EVER READY Silver 9V PP9 battery I bought from CPC DOES fit - 3.55 ex. VAT.

I'd thought the connector goes at the top into the cutout and thus the side of the battery comes nowhere near those bolts.
Perhaps I'm wrong, but I thought base of pack goes to base of set, not the side. Though I have Roberts that takes the batteries on their sides like your photo.

The back panel on Donalds radio looks concave, that might be why the struggle, or is it my eyes??

The orientation is right and good that it now fits. The back panel looks curved to me too which would explain the difficulty in sliding the battery over the bolt.

Thinking about it, the fact that the back panel appears to have warped will probably mean that the battery housing is slightly distorted as well. A liitle judicious straightening may help matters.

Thanks guys for your excellent attention to detail.

Hadn't noticed the concave back panel issue and will address that when the Roberts R303 gets to the top of my ToDo list.
