Default JVC HR 7650EK running issues

Hi, My JVC video recorder seems to have developed a fault.

The machine plays, however it will randomly stop playing the tape. Sometimes it plays for 20 minutes, other times 20 seconds before it stops playing the tape. This happens with all tapes.

The machine will pause, rewind, fast forward etc all OK.

Any advice really appreciated. Thanks.

If it only happens in playback or record mode then it's highly likely to be associated with the takeup. Remove the top cover and watch the takeup reel to see if any tape starts to spill into the machine or if the reel speed is erratic. You may find you have to do this in a darkened room to prevent ambient light triggering the tape end sensors.

There is an optical sensor under the reel which detects loss of rotation, if no pulses are detected from the sensor for a set number of seconds then the Mechacon will shut down the machine in an attempt to prevent damage to the tape.

I'm afraid I don't remember if this model has a takeup clutch arrangement or if the takeup reel is driven by the reel motor and idler.

John.

Hi. Definitely take a look at the belt and the idler that drives the take-up reel table. If the machine senses no reel rotation, it stops to prevent tape eating problems.

Has this VCR been given an overhaul? A common misconception is that something will work after years of not being used, when that is often not the case because not using something doesn't stop its components from ageing.

Keep an eye on the tape counter. If it stops while the tape is playing normally you have a problem with the reel rotation sensor - very often a clean is all that's necessary. Most mechanical problems with tape rotation tend to happen either at the beginning of the tape when the speed is too slow to spool the tape or towards the end when the weight of the full spool slows the mechanism down. Your random timing suggests we may have a sensor fault. Or maybe not!
