Default Philips N1700 VCR

I have restored a Philips N1700 VCR. New belts and cleaning. It worked fine for a few hours. Then it switched off. Now whenever the start button is pressed, the drum starts to rotated until the end. But immediately after that it switches off and the drum goes back. This should only happen if after a short time no action is done. But now it appears immediately.
Any idea how to repair?

I suspect one or more fuses went bad. Have a look on the service manual.

Is this with a tape in? Does the same happen if you defeat the interlocks and have no tape in? Is there any debris around the 'tape end' sensor? is there a wire broken off the tape end sensor? Is the capstan turning whilst this is happening? Capstan motors have been known to fail on these and if the capstan is NOT turning the machine will thread - then de-thread immediately.

It happens with the tape in and without the tape. All the belts are on and the drum and the capstan is still running. As I said it was correctly running and when changing the tape the failure occurred suddenly.

Hi there. Been having the same problem with my N1702. Finally got round to using the service manual (which has this problem as a common fault).

Page VII-7, N1700 (page 121 of the scanned PDF)

After following the instructions and taking the readings I found

3U219 = 2V
3U230 = 9V
10U236 = 11.5V
11U236 = 9.8V

According to the service manual flowchart I should check:
U236 (Ramp generator on top panel 21)
U513 (Reference Processor)
12U236->9U513
10U513-> +1A

-----

I have swapped over U236 and U513 from a spare machine but nothing much has changed.

Q1) what does the service manual mean when it says "12U236->9U513
10U513-> +1A"

Q2) any other ideas on what to check?

All advice greatfully received.
