Hiya. I'm completely new to this site, and not entirely sure how to make a post?
Recently I purchased a 1960s record player with a Garrard deck. I wired a plug and cleaned it up. When I plugged it in the deck began to spin which did shock me, but it soon stopped spinning. Me and my mum think it is either the band or the ball bearings that are causing this issue, but we have no idea how to remove the deck to have a look. I will work out how to post a photo. It is a Bush Garrard Record Player type SRP30. Many thanks

The worst thing to do with old /vintage kit is simply to plug it straight in after years of standing. There are parts which age badly and need to be checked and/or changed so they don't cause a domino effect failure. Bit late now I know, but it explains why it stopped working!
Is there any life at all now? Light on? sound form speaker? Or is it totally dead? The usefulness of the answers will depend on narrowing this down a bit. On these players there are 4 screws on the top board round the outside of the deck mechanism. These should be unscrewed and then the turntable platter gripped, the whole thing should lift out. Be slow and careful so you don't tug and break any wires between the deck and the amp inside below.

Hi,
These decks don't have a belt drive, but they do have an auto stop mechanism to stop the turntable at the end of the record. This is what's probably kicked in. To start the deck you have to pull the pick-up arm to the right. As Ben has said, bad idea to just plug in old stuff without checking it out. Been there, done that ![]() Make sure that the fuse in the plug is no larger than 3 amps. I've got one of these players and I think it's better than a Dansette, in my opinion. Cheers, Pete.
