The coils in the cartridge have continuity (post 16) and the amplifier is working (post 5); therefore, loss of magnetism in the cartridge seems to be the only plausible failure mode.

If you hold the cartridge near an Orienteering compass (borrow one from the nearest Boy Scout if needs be!), can you get the needle to deflect away from North? You are looking for a movement away from the cartridge -- plain, unmagenetised steel will always attract a compass needle, but a magnet will attract one end and repel the other.

It's also just about vaguely possible for the stylus cantilever not to be connecting with the armature plate. (I've actually had something similar happen with a ceramic cartridge: the plastic fork that connects the cantilever to the sensing elements was missing. And the record player was my birthday present.)

At any rate, if a new stylus did not fix it, then the cartridge is the only thing left now that can be faulty. Might be worth an autopsy, even!

I'm rather surprised that it was thought that the fitting a new stylus to a cartridge that was giving no mV output would solve this problem?

No luck with the new stylus, so conclude the cartridge is faulty.
Looking carefully under a magnifying glass where the stylus feed connects the hole is Damaged, but with not having anything to compare it with I am guessing this is the issue.

OK here's the cartidge I found. It looks better in the flesh! Stylus looks intact but untested so no guarantees.

If it fixes your turntable, then no charge, just keep it and use it. If not, I'll have it back for my "stores" please

PM me your address if you'd still like it.

Nick.

Roger tells me that it did indeed arrive, and that it did the trick (surprisingly in a way!).
