Isn't there a 'black death' type of failure with the old 290? The LCD begins to go black at the corners and it spreads inwards from there. I had a well-used example that was very bad.

Quite possibly, Andrew. I hadn't heard of that, but it's one more thing to look out for!
I am surprised at the high value that still seems to be attached to these radios, despite their age and the likelihood of expensive or irreparable faults developing. I also have the matching FL-2010 10 Watt linear amp, and I'm currently engaged in repairing its broken front panel.

The display is quiet readable without the backlight. And my lcd still works fine after 30 years.

The one I've got does have the 'LCD bleed' problem unfortunately
