Early Aerodyne deco radiogram spotted in Didcot charity shop
My favourite charity shop, Changing Lives in the Broadway in Didcot currently has a mid-1930s(?) Aerodyne radiogram for sale.
It's got lovely art-deco-ish styling and is in fair condition and looks complete. It has its original Garrard deck and a handful of NOS(??) boxed valves tucked inside. They currently are asking an optimistic £100 for it, but it's all in a very good cause, and I suspect it will hang around and the price will drop dramatically if previous experience is anything to go by. It's not particularly big or heavy, as these things go, and would easily go in the boot of an estate car, or any car with the seats down. I am sorely tempted, but I'm not in the market for a divorce at the moment Nick. |

Re: Early Aerodyne deco radiogram spotted in Didcot charity shop
This shop is literally just round the corner from me, so I popped in earlier. The set is already marked 'Reserved' and it has been moved to just inside the door, presumably for imminent collection. The shop is busy and it wasn't easy to get the set out and the back off for some pics. But I did manage a few. In case it's gone by the time Nick's next there here's a selection.
There is another label, like those in the second pic, which says 'Manufactured under Licence granted by the Mullard Radio Valve Company Ltd and Philips Lamps Ltd for use in Great Britain and the Irish Free State only. No 114298' and then the following characters were stamped in CT/R/3 (the 3 might be an 8). Cheers, GJ

It does not look like the 5 valve Swallow chassis on Trader 566, so it could be the 4 valve Cardinal with the Swan chassis. See Broadcaster service sheet on Paul's DVD.
Well worth preserving, and probably worth all of £100, I hope its going to a good home. Mike |

Re: Early Aerodyne deco radiogram spotted in Didcot charity shop
I'm pretty sure that there were only 4 valves on the chassis and I don't think that there were any empty sockets. I didn't open the boxes of spare valves but I could tell by lifting them that almost all had something in them.
Reading the valve box labels I can see PEN4VA (x3), VP4 (x3), AC2/HL, IW3, 354V and 442-BU. Cheers, GJ

Re: Early Aerodyne deco radiogram spotted in Didcot charity shop
The chassis looks very similar to the 'Swan' (c.1933). The Swan is a TRF. The 'Cardinal' listen on Trader is a superhet radiogram. Perhaps this Cardinal uses the earlier Swan chassis? Certainly the front panel control and tuning layout, including the scale escutcheon - with the Swan only showing metres, no station names - would suggest this.
One thing I can say with certainty is that the Swan amplifies records from an old-style magnetic pick-up very well, though an intermediate volume control is needed. If the chassis is used in the radiogram, some circuitry adjustments must have been made to control volume from the pick-up. Tony |

Sorry, I read this during the morning and added my reply this afternoon without checking the thread again, so I have basically repeated Crackle's thoughts!

The Garrard deck says something like "Garrard radiogram model" on it and the knob at its rear left seems to be an attenuator as far as I remember. N. |

Could you upload the pics to Radiomuseum? Or can I do it if you don't have an account or the inclination? Nick. |

Hi Nick
GJ has sent me some photos, a selection of which can now be seen in the Radio Museum. https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/aerodyne_cardinal.html If the new purchaser is a member of RM they can still upload their own photos. Mike |
