Default Beethoven model 78

A colleague discovered this in a loft and sent me a picture to see if I could identify it.

No numbers on the front or rear panels, but the engraving by the gram sockets suggest it's a model 78.

Going by the tuning dial markings, I'm thinking 1936-37.

He cannot find any references to it on the internet and neither can I, but searching for this particular model brings up a lot of results for shellac recordings. It's not in Radio! Radio!, nor on Radiomuseum.org.

I'm hoping he'll update me with a valve line-up. It just looks like 3+R, I think one could be an AC/VP1.

Has anyone else got or seen one or any further information? Were they somebody else's chassis or all Beethoven's effort?

I wonder if it was built in their Chase Road Factory (London NW10), our office isn't too far from there.

Kind Regards,

SR

My experience has been that early Beethoven sets do have the model number and serial number stamped on the backplate by the gram input in the format you describe. That's certainly the case with my model 64. So this is a model 78.

The model 77 dates from 1935.

Thanks Graham,

Yes, I think it was one of your previous posts that led us to deciding it's a model 78.

Just looked through all the BVWS auction photos and haven't seen one similar, so I'm presuming there aren't many of these in circulation today. Beethoven were not one of the main players in the UK radio industry.

Any more thoughts and recollections of the brand would be appreciated.

Regards,

SR

Thanks for taking the time to put these up, Kevin.

Pleased to see that there are some present day survivors of some of those models, according to radiomuseum.org. Maybe I should get some better photos of this model 78 and add it to the database.

There are some impressive Beethoven sets in the 1937 range - I wonder how the Stereophonic sound was achieved on that AC.852?

Regards,

SR

A bit of florid marketing I should imagine.

The "stereophonic" effect would not be apparent with the loudspeakers that close together.

With a modern hifi system (my own has Monitor Audio RS6 Silver loudspeakers ) spaced 8 -12 feet apart, mono sources produce a very well defined virtual image at the mid point between the speakers. Playing shellac 78's can produce a most pleasing effect
