Creating a Hyperlink
Quote:
In another thread Darren explained how to create a hyperlink. I couldn't get started because I couldn't work it out. Usually with this sort of problem the answer is obvious, so I apologise in advance for being a bit Colin M |

Re: Creating a Hyperlink
Simply copy the address in your browser (the top bar is most common) and paste it into your post.

Re: Creating a Hyperlink
One thing to be aware of is that if you copy and paste a link from a post, rather than from the address bar, it probably won't work. This is because links in posts are presented in a shortened form with missing characters replaced by dots.

Re: Creating a Hyperlink
I think there is some confusion here (generated by me).
As in post 2 I have always copied a URL from the top bar and pasted it into the post. I have however seen posts where you have something like "it can be found here". Where the word 'here' is in blue and links to the URL. I have used the button as in Paul's post, but that inserts the URL in full. Colin M |

I know what you're talking about, Colin, and I've always been envious of people who can do that too - it looks very neat.

Re: Creating a Hyperlink
You do it like this, but you'll need to replace the '*' with a '/'. That's what I've done on the third line of this post.
[url=https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/showthread.php?t=86683]this or anything you like[*url] will link you back to this thread. this or anything you like will link you back to this thread.

Re: Creating a Hyperlink
Thanks Graham.
My effort using your instructions should show this site's front page here Question - What about the term hyperlink? does it apply to what I have done above or is it a generic term for both methods of providing a link. Re: Creating a Hyperlink
I think hyperlink came from the very early days of the internet (Tim Bernads-Lee et al) where ordinary text became hypertext and hence links where hyperlinks.

Re: Creating a Hyperlink
Simpler to use the hyperlink button in the Quick Reply area. Get the actual URL by doing a Copy from your browser bar. Click the Insert Link button (little world with staple(?) underneath). Do a Paste (Ctrl/V is the keyboard shortcut) - this puts the URL in the link part of the hyperlink. Press Return. You will then have a hyperlink in your post, but with the URL repeated as the link name and highlighted. Now just type in the text for the link name. Job done!

If you click 'Quote' before replying it will show you how other people have done it.

Re: Creating a Hyperlink
Thanks Dave,
I tried what you suggested and it was very straightforward indeed. When I was trying it I used the "POST REPLY" button and then followed the rest of your instructions; this was so that I could use the "Preview Post" button and not clutter this thread up with extra posts. I was surprised when the URL was repeated highlighted, but when I reread your post I saw that that was exactly what should happen. It then disappeared when I typed my link name of course. NICK - We now have the means to appear much more skilled with computers than we actually are. Going back to my earlier question about terms, has anyone got a list of definitions of URL, link, hyperlink and any other terms relevant to this discussion? Colin M |

Re: Creating a Hyperlink
Thanks Paul.
Reading those documents helps a lot. Paul's URL and hyperlink in post 16 are hyperlinks. But http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_resource_locator (for example) is a URL. (should that be an URL?) Colin M Last edited by ukcol; 2nd Aug 2012 at 3:14 pm. Reason: added info |

Re: Creating a Hyperlink
Strictly speaking all the letters of URL should be pronounced separately (i.e. You Are Ell) but lots of people just pronounce it as one word (Earl) now. Standard grammar says 'a' for You Are Ell and 'an' for Earl.

Re: Creating a Hyperlink
Thanks Paul,
I was aware that 'a' should precede a consonant and 'an' a vowel but an URL doesn't sound write. Your explanation clears the question up neatly. Colin M |

Re: Creating a Hyperlink
Post 17 actually contains three hyperlinks, the third of which uses the URL as name. The URL is the text which uniquely identifies an internet item. A hyperlink is something you can click on to get to the internet item. A hyperlink may contain a URL, or it may use a relative address to something else on the same website.
