GPO TR35 No4 test meter
I have just been given this old test meter, it was found whilst they were clearing out his old factory which his family have owned for nearly 80 years and is now to close. What was it used for?. The low range is very low at 1mA per division. I will clean it later and if her in doors allows display it in our hallway.
Bob.

Re: GPO TR35 No4 test meter
Commonly known as a Detector No. 4.
When I joined Post Office Telephones in 1967 some of the older members of staff were still using these. They preferred them over the new fangled Meters Multi-Range. Used for simple fault finding on line plant and subscribers' equipment.

Re: GPO TR35 No4 test meter
As said Detector no4. Preferred by older members over the newer meters for HR faults, as drawing more current it showed up voltage drops on a line faster than the higher impedance meters ( least that was the explanation I got from my old mate/mentor).

Re: GPO TR35 No4 test meter
Not only did it have a leather case but also an additional, smaller, case to hold resistors and other shunts used for different requirements (not that anyone used them). It was also very robust- you could drop it from the top of a pole and it would still work!

Re: GPO TR35 No4 test meter
I recall in, back the mists of time, a PW article about converting these to have more ranges. It'll be in the usual archive somewhere. It involved moving the meter outside the case to make room ISTR.
