Ask your friend if his 746 is working correctly, is dialling out and is ringing when called. Ask him also to check that (with his answerphone disconnected) all his other telephones ring satisfactorily when his 746 is plugged in and a call is made to his number.

If all the above is satisfactory, ask him to plug his 746 into each telephone socket in turn, with his other telephones also plugged in to the other sockets as he goes, and repeat the tests in the first paragraph. Report back with your results.

Is his answerphone on a socket of its own, or is it on a dual (or triple) adaptor?

Hi,
Is the answerphone a newer machine or an older type of similar era to the 746? If the latter it may be that the answer phone connects to the line via a "Keats Adapter" which effectively puts the bell circuit in series with any associated telephone connected to it.

In the event of the 746 having being modified correctly (i.e. a 3k3 resistor fitted across T5 - T6 in the bell circuit), and the answerphone being wired for a series connected bell, the additional impedance in the Bell circuit could be preventing the ringing detector in the answerphone working correctly with the 746 in circuit thus preventing it from picking up a ringing line.

If anyone is wondering how the Answering machine ring detect circuit would work without a series connected bell in situ, I believe that there should be a relay fitted in its circuitry to accomadate for that 'modus operandi'

Regards
Andrew
