Pilot bulb for Philips BIF 270U
hi...I am a newbie here. I have recently acquired a Philips radio BIF 270U which is a LW/MW receiver made here in Ireland, maybe late 50s? The printed model number is BIF 260U but has a hand written 7 over the 6 !
The valve heaters are wired in series with the pilot light and a dropper resistor. The radio is working but the pilot / facia bulb is missing. It has a thermistor wired in parallel across it. I have measured the AC voltage drop at 20.2V when warmed up.. what sort of bulb do I need here? Any help would be appreciated.. |

Re: Pilot bulb for Philips BIF 270U
If You don't get an answer, You could start with a 24 Volt, 0.1 Amp bulb and see what happens. Some Philips sets used 19V bulbs.
I don't have access to a service manual at present. |

Re: Pilot bulb for Philips BIF 270U
You've probably found the entry for the BIF260U on Radiomuseum already. I would start there.
I've never tried myself, but it says that they allow guests to download schematics. If you get one for the BIF260U, and it seems sufficiently similar to your set, then it should tell you what type of bulb is required. Unfortunately, I think Philips sometimes used bulbs with atypical voltages, so even if you discovered the correct type, you may not be able to get one! If so, I think you could probably substitute a more typically rated bulb and use a resistor to 'drop' the excess voltage. I'm not sure how you'd calculate the value of the resistor, though. Hopefully, someone who's actually done something like this will see your post and adviseā¦ |

Re: Pilot bulb for Philips BIF 270U
Hi...yes I have been to Radiomuseum and have downloaded the schematics for the 260U, the bulb is in the drawing but not specified...
However although the plate on my radio states BIF270U, it seems identical to a B2ET67U Philips Orient Cairo made in Egypt in the gallery on Radiomuseum...but no schematics.. |

Re: Pilot bulb for Philips BIF 270U
Yes more than likely a 19V bulb. You are unlikely to find one of those....they tended to use odd ratings as already stated. Try a 24V .1A as suggested. It's about the nearest you'll get.

My 234u uses an 18v 0.1 mes fitting screw in bulb. I replaced with one of the bulbs in the attached picture

Thanks to all. I bought some 24V 2.8W bulbs from Farnell and we have light!
