Isolation TFRMR console construct project
Dear forum,
I have built an isolation transformer unit for my little workbench and this is the way I have done it. Any thing is change-able, but I think I have constructed it to best of my knowledge. I just wish to ask any of you to please proof read and give me any corrections or changes that I may need to do for legal, safety and logical reasons. Please see the attatched PDF file that I have drawn up. Thank you all in advance. Greg. |

Re: Isolation TFRMR console construct project
I am not an electrician so not qualified to make any comments on safety etc.
Just a couple of random thoughts. My variac has a metal case and I would feel uncomfortable powering it from your output socket (in isolated mode). I would perhaps provide a special 13A socket with isolated mains but a permanent earth connect solely for the variac. I would probably not have a switch in the earth line - too easy to leave in the wrong position - but can't decide on a more foolproof method. Maybe a big red neon which glows if earth is on the output would help?

Perhaps the earth connexion should be a momentary switch so it can be used for testing but not left in a possibly dangerous state. We all have different ideas abut safety, I am happy "lifting earths" form 'scopes etc. for example.

Thanks fellas, all good advice from you.
@buggies, yea, good idea, a big red neon is on the way for the output earth. Nice one. Cheers. |

Dear forum,
With all of your tips, tricks, knowledgen, advice & experience, I have re-drawn the schem and ordered the things I need to move forward. Please take a look at the revised PDF schematic and give me some corrections where you can identify them. Many thank you's. |

Re: Isolation TFRMR console construct project
I have been thinking about making an isolation transformer unit for my workshop. To save all the "earth the earth pin (UK 13A BS1363 etc.) or not" stuff I think I will make it have two pin BS1363 output connector using the MK style shutters that only need the L+N pins to work, so I can plug in a 13A plug either way round (not that it would make any difference) but I would know it is the isolated output. The earth pin would then be floating and accessible for measurement.
Time for a socket, hacksaw and car body filler to make a prototype I think. |
