2 questions gents. See attached photos.

Can someone explain how the felt clutches and the 4 clutch rubbers, which are handed, work?
My understanding so far is, that the spool retainers can be directly driven for rewinding, and I understand that tape tension has to be maintained despite changing speeds due to the amount of tape on a reel. I can also see how the brake works.

As my clutch rubbers have dissolved, I'm trying to think how I can make replacements. This might be easier when the question above is answered.

I have a new set of drive belts to fit, after I've removed the goo that used to be the 4 drive belts.

I think you need some of these?

I was having a clearout and found some new ones in a packet. These are not black and are possibly made of different material. They ARE genuine Philips (ex stock from a workshop clearout. The pack is unopened and they seem to be in excellent condition.

If these are what you want they are yours for cost of postage. Let me have your details by PM.

You'll need some Swarfega, baby wipes and old clothes! Amazed you've found some of those rubber fingers - lucky.

Yes I do feel lucky, maybe I should try the lottery this week.
Thank you Richard. As you can see from the attached images they fit perfectly. Philips made a good decision to change the material to silicon? I'm not putting the new clutch rubbers or drive belts anywhere near the chassis until all remains of the goo are removed. Colin

What a lucky find, and a top forum.

Perhaps you should take some measurements of them in case the future requires more that have to be somewhat...'handcrafted'.

Gents. The tape reorder is now complete and working well. It's got some work to do as there are around 35 tapes to go through. The only other trouble, apart from the rotten rubber was fixed with switch cleaner. The brake for the left hand spool carrier, which is only used during "pause" was made from the rubbery plug from an I C tube. Think that idea came from this forum?

Well done!

That CRT wedge thing idea was probably mine ;-) I still have a Pye I did this to back in the '90s and rubber's still fine.

I also used to use the rubber bungs from old N1500 video cassette boxes (that kept the spools slackening).

It's quite satisfying when something scrap is put to a different use, and it looks like it was made for the job....

Hiya, what is the thickness of the clutch material as I think I will try making my own.

P.S. What do you think they are made of?

They are 0.095" thick, and 0.72" long measured with a vernier. These new ones appear to be made of silicon. They have not aged. Good luck.
