The number of times I have done that.

On one occasion I removed the plug to refit the top only to thread it on backwards!
And we are supposed to learn by mistake?

That one also has a white terminal block as well as the cover.
So there are indeed more out there.

I once undid a rubber plug to put the cover on, then realised I hadn't fitted anything on the other end of the wire yet!

As for Christmas tree lights; they must have a bakelite bayonet plug, surely. The type that twists to become a 5 Amp two-pin is a luxury, but anything else is, well, just wrong.

Yep, guilty! I always fit a 60s plug to a 60s appliance. When I finally found another example of the long-departed Diora Calypso radio we had in the family when I was small, I was able to fit the original Clang plug that came off the original and I had saved for 20+ years! I started a thread on the UK's 'worst plugs' last year, kicking off with that one made by Clang. It has the hinged external fuseholder that gets loose. I call it 'the fuse you lose'...

After reading this thread I'm glad I'm not the only one that has an obsession with plugs! I almost always change the plug on an appliance to something which I think 'fits' it better. And looking at some of the photos you've added to this thread, I'm quite jealous that you own some these plugs, particularly the spring-loaded MK (which has been noted above is in excellent condition!) and the unusual (for me anyway) Sanders Wednesbury 13 amp plug.

I have quite a large collection of 13 amp plugs that I've collected and acquired over a few years, and will try and get a couple of pictures up of the more unusual ones that I have.

And Colourstar, I enjoyed reading the thread on 'the worst UK plugs', although I must admit that some of the worst offenders that were brought up are some of my favourites, like the large square Ever Readys and slim-line Legrands.

Hi,

Just to chuck another one on the pile! I unearthed this one. It's a "MastaAdapta" made by Conblock. Designed to connect four small appliances to one 13amp outlet, I used to use it for my 'audio separates'. It turned up in a box of stuff I brought back from the UK on our latest trip. Each of the little sockets is shuttered (why two are yellow and two green, I have no idea), and it has a 5amp fuse fitted.

I did not notice that they were shuttered.
Yes indeed they are
Mine is branded "micromark"
It came off a bit of equipment that was BER and there are only three plugs with it one having an IEC mains lead connected and it has a 13 amp fuse in the carrier.
It will get used once I run out of 13 amp sockets on my test rack.
Mine has grey shutters on the top two and red on the bottom two.

These are some of the plugs from my collection, the first is MK brown / ivory bakelite plugs - did this plug ever have an official name? Like the MK Safetyplug or Toughplug did?
Secondly is more MK plugs, again - did these ever have a name?
Third is a WG switched plug with indicator light
Fourth is two Marbo bakelite plugs, but with an MK to show how similar they are in design
And finally is a few MK plugs which are branded, has anyone got any other designs? I think the BBC had some, but I don't own one of those....yet!

There are more pictures, but I can only upload 5 in one post

Impressive collection, Wyvern27, thanks for sharing it!

I assume you haven't got any small children around?!

I have another MK branded one which you can have FOC if you pay the postage.

Nick.

I've got one of their 4-side-by-side power-strips here: it used to be velcro'd to the underside of my computer-desk. Unfortunately when I donated my old computer to a friend I also gave away two of the 3-pin MastaPlug-to-IEC leads.... leaving me in a bit of a quandary - the cost of sourcing a couple of new MastaPlugs was silly and so I switched to using a commercial data-centre power-strip that had a 16-amp 'C19' input [fed from a BS546 15-amp outlet] which in turn provided a load of standard C13/C14 'kettle plug' type sockets.

When I was a small child I had a not dissimilar collection of what was then (about 50 years ago) vintage plugs - mostly 2-pin but some 3-pin. It wasn't long until as a slightly bigger child I was wiring them up for real

I doubt today's children are really much more likely to come unstuck than '50s ones, just our perception of potential danger has evolved.

I can just about remember using them like Leggo bricks.
Wyvern27 is ready to make up a huge batch of custom mains leads there with his huge collection.

I agree. I was more referring to the unterminated stubs of cable protruding from a few of them. This has apparently been responsible for fatally frying a few toddlers over the years. I am much more careful about removing these from salvaged plugs than I used to be, now that I have kids

You're right, I don't have kids! But now that you've mentioned it, I will be more conscious about the cable left behind and remove them!
And thanks Nick, that would be great - I'll send you a PM

I will have to remember to use the ones with stubs of cable sticking out first.
No children about to get hold of them.

I need to make up two mains leads using the ones that are two pin and earth and it is looking good with a couple that look almost NOS.
I also dug up an old rubber mains lead with a matching socket.
I will not use it again as it is getting a little perished where it thickens up to the inline socket. I am surprised it has not turned to goo after all the years it has been in a box.

Hi,

Those unearthed connectors are popular the Quad and DAC90 fraternity!

It's funny that it's nearly always drive belts that turn to goo whereas rubber wiring and connectors just dry out, split and go crumbly. Maybe you could put some heat shrink sleeving over the perished bit.

Cheers,
Pete
