The only MK plugs I have ever seen with rotated pins weren't used in council properties but were more likely to be used on "clean earth" supplies where computer equipment and the like would be connected, I have certainly seen some of these at various hub sites in my workplace.

The local council estate in the village which I lived, during my childhood, had some houses with Dorman & Smith round pinned 13 amp sockets and others with either 13 amp BS1363 sockets or 15 Amp BS 546 types.

Back on topic I have some MK plugs in my collection which have red covers and are marked "Hospital Property" in white, at least they were until someone tried to rub the legend off (not me, they were like that when I obtained them at a local car boot sale) I am unable to post pictures of them at present as they are hidden away somewhere in the shed......

Regards

Andrew

MK have special use plugs & sockets with a T shaped earth pin for non standard applications like smoothed earths or an uninterruptible power supply, common in hospitals.

When looking at MK plugs on eBay I saw a listing for a gold plated Safety Plug. Apparently it was the 100 millionth manufactured.

Most of my MK's are the usual white ones, I do have one with the Granada logo on it & sadly missed the opportunity to rescue the Hotpoint MK from my mothers tumble-dryer before it was replaced.

However, I do have one curiosity, on the face of it, it's every bit a standard MK, same design as the current ones, no clue as to where it was made and the curious bit? It's dark grey in colour.

I've yet to see another like it, think it came from B&Q (no ties) and was the only one in the box.

B&Q do sell MK accessories. It's 2018 now, brown & white don't really inspire today's consumers so I'm not surprised that the new designs embrace colour as well.

I would guess that the gold plated one has been done by some faker at home for quick bucks...

It seems that several companies are selling gold, silver and rhodium plated MK Toughplugs to the audiophile community. One review describes normal mains plug pins as being made of copper.

Gold pins give a mellower sound than rhodium according to one "review".

Bless.

The current MK catalog is available here:

http://www.mkelectric.com/en-gb/Docu...essed-orig.pdf

The "Toughplugs" and "Safetyplugs" are on page 241; the "Duraplug" range [also owned by MK] is a couple of pages previous.

I really hope that is just a gold effect finish on the covers for what looks like a promotional gift for employees or maybe just managers at MK, otherwise it's the exact opposite of a safety plug (think more Photonicinduction ).

Sounds dangerous!, Has anybody seen any more logos on plugs (doesn't have to be MK, but it would be nice if it was, and I saw an MK plug with a switch the other day, not to take, mind you!, Keep a look out for any other variations everyone!

Leo

The MK plug with the switch reminds me of my parents kettle. The kettle had no switch, and unswitched sockets were common. So it was really handy. Of course it didn't switch off when the water boiled so if you let it boil dry a mechanical plunger pushed the plug out of the kettle end.

That's cool, I'm guessing that you didn't salvage the plug

Nice, did it come with a piece of equipment, or was it just a collection piece?

Thank you for posting

Unfortunately, no. I can't remember if it was still in use when I left home or whether it had been updated by then. Wish I had though.

Back in the '90s I bought some Granada ones from a stall at a radio rally. They were redicuously cheap and looked new.

When I was young, we had some HH electrical branded MK's both in brown and in white. They were the square ones they came before the safety plug. Does anyone know what HH electrical was?

Interestingly, in my work, we exclusively fitted MK safety plugs on some items, but toughplugs on others where we felt the users could drop and smash a safety plug. Around 10 years ago the design of the toughplug internals changed from the binding post style to the standard through hole design. Cost cutting? No where near as good.

I remember those MK switched plugs: I fitted one to my parents' 1970s "log effect" electric fire, which was powered through a 3-way adapter that also fed the TV and the radio - making it easier to switch the fire off without disturbing the other 2 outlets, which invariably happened if you tried to pull the fire plug out!
I have a couple of white in use,and have been looking for some more for years.
Does anyone know of a modern equivalent?
Thanks
Bill

I have a proposed power upgrade in the pipeline for my workshop.
I grabbed a pack of 5 NOS small footprint MK sockets on sight from the local flea market due to a shortage of space around the racking.
