Lightbulb Help with Dynatron SRX32 amplifier.

Hello I was wondering if you could give me some advice?
I have a Dynatron SRX32 and suddenly the amp just stopped working. I recently got new speakers and wonder if it could be them.
The only thing that works is the station signal indicator and the record deck, cassette deck and that's about it, the speaker on one side also started to go fuzzy but it seems to be the jack that's faulty and not the speaker.
Is there a way to fix it at home myself or would it be a case of getting it refurbished or at least fixed?

Have tried the old speakers? it’s also possible that a fault in the new speaker wiring could have damaged the amplifier.
If you have headphones try those, if those do work check the wiring and new speakers, if the headphones or old speakers don’t work the amplifier will require repair.

Speakers very rarely fail. Why did you feel the need to replace them in the first place? There are 4 in this unit.
It is more likely that the amplifier is failing, especially in just one of the channels. This as a very predictable fault on these. This model is one of the last Dynatrons.

Hi Gareth, if you can give us an idea of your level of expertise we may be able to advise you better.

Note that there are still one or 2 places in this area that will repair what is a nice looking set

It is a nice looking set, I remember selling them, they gave little trouble. Of course that is 40 odd years ago.

Speakers and things cutting out, even dead circuits are often caused by dirt and dust in the controls. The controls might just need a spray with some Servisol Switch Cleaner.

If the SRX32 used germanium transistors in its audio amplifier, there's a good chance that the 'tin whisker' problem is responsible for the fault. NPN/PNP pairs of AC127/128 type devices were used, with cooling clips bolted together. To check for this, temporarily remove the cooling clips, preferably one pair at a time. If the fault clears then the transistor(s) concerned are defective, with a leak or short circuit between one or more of their internal elements and the metal can. Personally I would replace all such devices in both channels for the sake of reliability. Suitable replacemnts should still be available, but may be rather pricey by now.

Open up the back, with the plug out the wall socket, a check to see if any fuses have blown.

Do you have and can you use a digital multi meter?

Andy.

I doubt the OP can respond to the technical advice [from what he said].
It does look quite good but that Dynatron "Regency" styling always seemed over blown to me, especially in most domestic settings... unless there's lots of chintz, lamps and expensive wallpaper. Looks like it might be in a storage container at present!

Yes that’s the sort of place they went to, and the owners thought they looked splendid.

The record deck fitted and the styling of the controls indicate that this was made well after the germanium era - probably late 70's or early 80's.

The SRX30 uses silicon transistors so presumably does the 32 in the audio amp.
