Who made these resistors?
Hi,
I have come across these small square resistors in transistor radios. They are about 8 x 6 mm in size Please see pic ( slight damage was due to removal ,it was faulty before) I've found them in Hackers and Radiomobile radios. They always seem to be faulty ! ( reading high ) I had one which was a great noise generator ( in the base circuit of a Radiomobile radio ) fault sounded like a noisy transistor in the af stage Does anyone know who made them and why are they so unreliable ! Cheers ,Pete |

Re: Who made these resistors?
"UBT"?? Dunno if that's a make or type number.
Racal used them for a while in the '60s ISTR but had ditched them for TR4 metal oxide types by the time I started. They looked nice and neat in rows on a PCB but they didn't have a good reputation even then. Maybe someone a bit older than me will know (60 odd).

Re: Who made these resistors?
They were extensively used in Radiomobile & Motorola Radios made between c. 1971 & 75 ( the 80, 1070, 1080, 1095 & related models), but I don't know who made them either. AFAIK we didn't often have to replace them, though, as you say, Pete, they could sometimes be great noise generators!
