Philips EL3300/EL3301 oscillator coil
Recently I acquired two pc boards of the amplifier of the Philips EL3300/EL3301 cassette recorder. Both pc boards have the designation 3W 999 17.2. I removed the adjustable oscillator coils but they have different colour code. In the service manual there is no reference of their inductance. Would you please identify their inductance? A pic is attached.

No reason, except as documentation of the colour code on these coils. That is in fact interesting, as I don't know whether part numbers or a value are encoded.

I found only the part number which is 482210700469 (although the color codes are different) and it doesn't mean anything to me...

Philips used a rather complicated indirect index system for part numbers. As a general rule, numbers starting with 4822 are reserved for the service department while factories used completely different numbers, so 4822 numbers are rarely found on factory mounted parts and parts almost always have another number as well. The number you mention is probably even a bit more meaningless than normal 4822 numbers as it belongs to a short lived system that was only used in 1963/1964.
My working hypothesis at this moment is that the coil with 3 stripes is a bit older than the coil with 4 stripes and that the stripes correspond to the last 3 or second last 4 numbers respectively of the factory part code but they even could have used an entirely different coding system. I fully expect that it might take years to find this out in more detail, so it probably isn't of practical use for you (it is faster to find someone with the right measuring equipment and just measure the induction). |

Thanks for that info, I wanted to identify that. The code number mentioned, I got from a page of a very old printed SM of 3301/00, most of the parts mentioned there, mechanical and electronic, have the numbers 4822...as a header. The peculiar thing, is that most of the electronic parts, R, C and S (inductance) in the SM are mentioned by a code number 4822...without any value...you have to check the schematic, which is not easy to read, except of the S values which are not mentioned!. The inductance measured at the setting I found both, was 4-5mH, since it is a variable one.

Please mind that the part about the 3 stripe coil being older is just a hypothesis. Before working with that, see if you can find any other means to know the date. You have only the PCB assemblies, not the decks or motors? Then you might have a look at the date codes on the semiconductors. Or maybe on an LF transformer or other larger part.

Here are my findings:
On the motors is typed 1st:WR 02 23 65, 2nd WR 02 52 65. On the TRs AC125 397 & P on top, AC128 3V4 & H on top both. On the loudspeakers AE 37009 both. On the 1st LF transformer A3 571 24 WD 115 both. On the 2nd LF transformer A3 571 23 WD 115 both.

I'm not certain after a lot of years, but could the WR codes indicate that the motors were made in 1965, the first in week 23 (June), and the 2nd. in week 52(end of December). What the 02 part of the number stands for I don't recall, but 1965 would be about right for the EL3301/02 series of Cassette Recorders. I can't shed any light on any of the other codes, though.

The labels on the motors are likely the final assembly date labels of the sets. WR02 is the second revision from Vienna, the dates are indeed as LIVEWIRE says, 1965 week 23 and week 52 respectively.
My first hypothesis would then mean there was a change in part number from the old system to the new between week 23 and 52 during a continuing production run in the same factory. Less likely but still possible, however I can't really get the colours to match plausible code number's tails - so two things that make me doubt. Another explanation could be that the stripes are only a date code, since both end in a 5 (week 195 and week 425 do match the sets productions dates so it is at least somewhat plausible). For the sake of completeness: I'm not sure how to decode the batch codes on the transistors (they switched to a more readable system around 1970). WD115 on the transformers means Week 11, 1965. The A3 and AE numbers are part numbers from the old system. No date of manufacture can be derived from those but interesting to know anyway. The date of manufacture on the speaker, if present, likely starts or ends in AH (or possibly WR). |

The date on the 2nd. speaker is, as you say, not clearly legible, but I'd hazard a guess that it's 1965. This would tie in with the manufacturing or assembly dates of both recorders.

I would say week 19 and possibly week 46, neatly in line with the other dates. I've seen Miniwatt branded speakers before, all manufactured in Austria.
