Default Motor rewinding in the UK

Hello guys this has probably been asked before and I am not sure if I have done the asking or not, mods feel free to move if this is not the right section.

Is there any where that does motor rewinding in the UK, specifically in the North West of England?

How difficult is it to rewind the coils your self?

I have a 2 speed Connoisseur turntable which may from Circa 1950, which I have mentioned on here before that has a blackened winding.

I will be shortly testing using the lamp limiter method to see if it is defective or not.

All help much appreciated.

if the laminations are welded then dismantling might be difficult!

Rewinders are few and far between these days, but I'd have thought there'd be one in the Manchester area. There's one in Ipswich which I've used, but the proprietor wants to retire and can't find anyone to take over the business.

Unless the motor is a special (mine had a non-standard flange), it's generally cheaper to buy a new one.

Sadly all the re-winders that I used to use in the Stockport and South Manchester areas are gone.
Seems that our society is no longer interested in prolonging the life of anything. It's greener to dump it/melt it down then waste a load more energy making a poor quality replacement and ship it from China. I am sure that last statement is an untruth.

If you can get it into the third world (eg. Africa) or the fourth (Philippines) then there are lots of re-winders.
Sam.

I googled 'motor rewinds manchester' and got a lot of hits in the city, some near me (Trafford Park / Stretford). Whether anywhere small and low-key enough to do what you want remains - I don't know.

cheers

I found that most or all want to rewind only big motors. Anything under half horse power was refused usually.
We wanted dishwasher and washing machine motors rewinding, found it very difficult.
Those that did try, produced a very poor job. Sometimes the stators wouldn't fit back in the frames.
Armature rewinds were impossible.

Thanks guys that is all useful I will try to post a picture of it, it should come to pieces fairly easily but would be willing take advice on best way to approach it.

Motor or I should say coils not dissimilar to Ferrograph motor but round shape overall.

It is as far as I know AR Sugdens own design he used it from about 1950 in all models/designs for turntables right up the BD1.

Park Gate at Carlisle (Kingstown Ind. Estate) do a good job. Smiths, the other specialist motor winders in the city, went out of business a decade or so ago.

Park Gate are certainly worth an ask and have done single-phase FHP stuff in the past.

I spent a few weeks during my apprenticeship in the 80's at Davis & Hall in Lancaster.

They used to do the odd small motor, but it would have to wait till the apprentice was free to work on it.

I was amazed to see that they are still going and will have to pop in some time to visit the place.

They might be worth a phone call to see if they would work on your motor.
