Wee antique Brass hinge Wanted
Wanted please, one(or a pair) - small (old) "Side Rail Hinge"("Jewellery Box Hinge")
Dimensions = 3/8" (or10mm) wide, 2 1/8" (or 55mm) long, by 1mm thick Yep - thousands on Google, most cheapo Chinese brass plated steel, but non seem to match the size & thickness I need, anyway. Plus the original recess will only take a 1mm thick hinge, and needs to look "right". Regards, David |

Re: Wee antique Brass hinge Wanted
Try a model shop that does boats, Mantua in Windsor (where the Queen lives) are very good, they do post. Very helpful and are real model enthusiasts.

Re: Wee antique Brass hinge Wanted
Just couldn't find a correct replacement to match the old Victorian/Edwardian one. So made one myself, having found a small plate of brass the exact thickness. Took ages & ages of cutting/filing/ and heating to match the tongue half to the fork half. Now have a matched pair.
Guess this thread can be closed or moved, Moderators. Regards, David |

Re: Wee antique Brass hinge Wanted
Thanks Mike. Right enough Andy, my close-up pictures are well below the standard of some great photos on this Forum site, and more particularly the BVWS Bulletin. I use a KM Dimarge Z5 which is years old, but has taken some great pictures in the past. (Even got onto the "Back Page" of the VMARS Signal magazine once). Would've taken it to a Jessop's shop before now, for a service, but the Aberdeen branch is long gone.
The heffing hinge - was for a Victorian Writing Slope, which had seen better days. Decided to use it to store my wee collection of early 1950's "Crystal Triodes" (Transistors) - - 267 LAN's, GEC GT1's, etc. Plus other ancient components. On closer inspection the Slope needed a fair bit of work doing. Cracks, splits, veneer lifting, & the old tooled leather Scriver was awful. Yep - I moaned enough about making the hinge, but the original key was missing, and I had to open up the lock & do a "reverse engineering" jobby on a replacement "blank" - took longer than the hinge. The general cleaning & the final French polishing took ages. Got a fau leather scriver off the internet, and it was a twot to trim & glue down. Also laid new green baize in the inside bottom & in the secret drawers, and on the bottom underside. Also, two of the corner brass straps were missing, but sourced some 2nd hand replacements off the internet. Anyway, this was my 2nd serious attempt at veneering repair, since a 1945 Ambassador 545 AC/DC( Thread - 9th May 2019). I'd much rather work with solid hardwood cabinets & cases & boxes, and Bakelite, than veneered pine carcasing. Regards, David |

Re: Wee antique Brass hinge Wanted
Drool! I love shiny old brass bound wooden boxes of any description.
I've found sometimes you can get better focussed "closeup" pictures by standing further back then cropping the image to "zoom in" on the part of interest. If the camera has high enough resolution it works quite well
