Default Beocom 1400 wiring advice

I have purchased a turquoise version of this phone to match my kitchen painted in lockdown.

I am struggling to work out how to wire the BT a631 plug. The wires are brown, blue, red, yellow. They don’t correspond to colours on the old crimping tool instructions I have acquired. I’ve searched historic B&O forums to no avail.

Any advice appreciated. Keen to get this phone working if possible.

Many thanks Kneale

Was your 1400 designed to run on the UK system, Kneale?

I don’t think so if honest. I also have a much commoner 1401- it has an “Ethernet style” plug and works with an adaptor. It is completely different from this turquoise phone sadly. I had hoped just to swap the wires.
There is next to no information on the 1400 out there sadly.

Many thanks

I was thinking that you could pick out the A&B line wires and just bimble about with open ends before committing to a crimped-on plug 'til you got dial tone and the ability to dial out, but I don't know if it's configured for third-wire ringing or not. It's unlikely you would damage anything if you used the wrong two wires, or reversed them.

After you've got that far, see if it rings or not. Then worry about which is the bell / 'anti-tinkle' wire.

Many thanks Russell. Good idea. I have attached a photograph of the the inside of the socket. I have done a load of searching and the only hint of anything similar came from an old B&O forum:
https://archivedforum.beoworld.org/forums/t/824.aspx

Tantalisingly close as I suspect an answer to the final question would have solved my question.

I have bared the wires but any tips about which to try with particular socket pins would be appreciated. Not sure if the phone is German or Danish or?? Done a lot of searching to see what wire codes they used in their lines but haven’t got anything which makes sense for this phone.

Many thanks again,
Kneale

Use wires 2 and 5 in the BT socket.

If you look at that original plug, locate the 2 center wires. Just connect them to a battery one equal to this is perfect. https://www.batteryjunction.com/dura...4b1z-1-9v.html

If you hear yourselves when speaking and the touch tones works you have found the 2 wires used in most of the world. you have to connect those to the line and test incoming ringing to be sure that it is all you need.

Again - all help appreciated.

Using all the tips above I have now worked out that brown to 2 in the socket with red to 5 gives me a dialling tone. A definite step forward.

I now need to work out how to get the ringer working. Any suggestions? Am I likely to need both remaining wires (yellow and blue). Any suggestions as to which to try and to which connection 3/4. I can’t jump / hold / connect any wires other than two.

Many thanks. Keen to get this functional if possible as it’s a nice designer phone which is perfect for the planned position.

Thanks again,
Kneale

You'll need to rig up a means of securing red and brown wires to terms. 2 and 5 in the LJU, possibly with croc-clipped flying leads. Or you could make up an open-ended test-plug and flying lead with one of your BT plugs and a bit of scrap telephone cable. If you use the plug though, remember terms. 2 & 5 on the LJU will equate to pins 5 & 2 on the plug; ringer / anti-tinkle term. 3 on the LJU becomes pin 4 on the plug.

Once you're in the aforementioned position, try this...

*With brown to 2, red to 5, connect yellow to term. 3 on the LJU or pin 4 on the plug.
*Make the telephone ring (17070 or use another phone).

If no ring:-

*With brown to 2, red to 5, connect blue to term. 3 on the LJU or pin 4 on the plug.
*Make the telephone ring (17070 or use another phone).

If no ring still, repeat the above with red and brown wires reversed.

Many thanks to everyone. Now working.

Russell - wish I’d thought of making a test plug earlier. Made fiddling a lot easier.

It was blue from phone to 4 in socket to get the ring tones sorted out.

Best wishes,
Kneale

Excellent! Looks a nice thing to have, and even better now it's working!

It's handy to have a test lead. I bought one of these things, years ago, and it's really useful. You can get them with 4mm sockets on too.
