In the past, when the technical staff were often entirely male, I've seen secretaries pulled in to perform photographic duty.

I remember a photo in an old Inmac catalogue where the model was supposedly testing some PCB with a logic probe. Problem was that the logic probe was being held upside down so that the LEDs were not visible. And I know said model of logic probe did not have a beeper as well.

The attached is a screen shot from Banksy's video about the self destructing girl and balloon print.

My mother in law used to drink tea straight from the pot and wash dishes in boiling water. I think women just have skin with a higher temperature rating.

At least both cases only risk contaminating cheap soldering irons with burnt skin.

It could also show that Metcal put the handle in the right instinctive place.

She's got safety glasses, but people nearby will need ear defenders.

I'd just got a vision of her putting the teapot spout in her mouth and sucking!

And how to tell if the photographer and/or photo shoot director has ever used a soldering iron..

Perhaps it was Superwoman in that picture? She would have no trouble holding a soldering iron by the tip.

Or was it an illustration from NVQ Level 1 Electronic Assembly, which teaches students which end of the soldering iron to hold? There was rumoured to be an analogous course for plumbers, where the soldering iron is replaced by a blowtorch.

It's not just holding the iron in the wrong place:

The iron looks to be a crude ancient high-power non-temperature-regulated monstrosity, not something you'd ever be using on a modern PCB.

She's also seemingly 'soldering' on the component-side not the trace-side.

Oh well.

It could be a double-sided board. But I'm still not sure about that either - she doesn't appear to be using any solder, nor is there any on the bench!

She's not the only one. Most of these pictures are stock images taken by people who had no idea about soldering.

Can't believe you're being so picky Graham.

That lady's taken the trouble to put matching safety specs on, and has even taken her hard drive apart to give it a jolly good going over with Mr Sheen. If only someone had told her that she needed to switch the soldering station on, though.

Seriously, this kind of thing does rather reinforce gender stereotypes.

Nick.

Just imagine the advertising copywriters...

"Our skilled and attentive workforce is ready for your prototype and production work" Now we just need a couple of pictures, yeah, they should do.

Ought to increase business no end.
