r-type.org reckons they're "sensibly equivalent" so likely it'll work as a sub.

They appear to be. EBC81 is Mullard, 6LD12 could be Mazda. Either will replace the other.

That's not correct.
6LD12 = EABC80, not EBC81.
Then again I'm sure you just did a typo.

The valve museum classes them as suitable. The EBC81 is only 55mm high the EBC80 is 59mm so need to check the headroom.
Abosolute max ratings and pin out are the same, I have not checked the other specs.
