Toshiba SM-500Y
Just picked up some Turntables and speakers for $50 and i am most interested in the big one, a Toshiba SM-500Y. The turntable looks very well built, and with a new belt it should work. Rats have eaten through the power cord, so will be fixing that
Question: I cant find any information on this Toshiba SM-500Y unit anywhere ? I would love a manual on it. - AM/FM, and 2 Short Wave bands - High and Low Filters, plus Loudness - Very well built turntable, similiar to a CDC unit i have. Well, hope someone has so info. |

Re: Toshiba SM-500Y
Well, changed the power cord, and belt and gave it a good clean, and here it is working in all its glory !! after being outdoors under zinc sheets.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5M7iR_H7Qic Such a well built unit.. The turntable motor has two wicks (like kero lamps) inside a plastic tube, the tube/wicks, go to the bearings, so both bearings can be oilled from the top of the unit !! never seen that before Hopfully someone in the future may find this info useful, as there is just about nothing on the internet on this model. |

Re: Toshiba SM-500Y
I can’t find any information either, the photos are interesting.
The two transformers on a PCB, are they audio transformers and if so are they driver or output types, or perhaps something completely different?

Re: Toshiba SM-500Y
Frank, They are Audio, because they are on the Audio Driver Board. There are actually 2 main transistors per channel, which are bolted to the chassis, and face down. They are not the larger T03's but the smaller ones. There does not appear to be an output transformer. Given the label on the back says 50W audio output, i don't think the two small ones you can see are the main outputs.
