Asda now selling 100W equivalent LED GLS lamps
Good evening,
I went into Asda earlier and I noticed they are selling 18W GLS LED lamps which is 100W incandescent equivalent. It claims 1500 lumens. Since until now I have been only able to find up to 60W equivalent types and this is a bit dim for my workshop room. I bought one to try, which is only £8 each and now the workshop is considerably brighter. The lamp has a good heatsink and is fairly heavy and general construction looks good. Will have to see what EMC it produces though as it has come from a reputable source it should be ok. Christopher Capener

Re: Asda now selling 100W equivalent LED GLS lamps
I tested an Aldi 10.5 W LED strip light and it passed with flying colours.
It is a two footer with the electronic ballast concealed in an aluminum extrusion and It was difficult for me to find any AM noise. I tried several radios just to be sure. I went back and cleaned out because the 4 foot strip in the kitchen is getting a bit slow to start and three of these will be brighter with a better light distribution. They are shipped with a ghetto blaster mains lead and link cable so that they can be installed in a string from one power source. The 13A plugs are removable and can be reused. |

There's a bit of a difference between the price quoted by Christopher £8 and the £15 in the link to Asda.
Are they on special offer in store?

I missed that. That may well be the case. Tesco sell nice Osram 60W-equivalent ones, which drop to 2/3 normal price every so often, so it pays to keep your eyes open for offers.

Re: Asda now selling 100W equivalent LED GLS lamps
Hi,
Is the quality of the light output good ( looks like a tungsten bulb ) And can you dim these please ? I bought some Osram gu10 LEDs and the quality of light is very good. They do both dimmable and non dimmable .the non dims are on offer in Dyas 2 for £8 ! I don't think Osram do 100w LEDs in a gls format yet ? Cheers Pete |

Pete,
The Osram 60W GLS equivalents are certainly superb in terms of light quality, just as good as tungsten in my opinion. You are right that any Osram 100W GLS equivalents don't seem to have hit the shops yet. N. |

The one shown in the asda link is correct though the price is £8 in the Coventry store at present. It is non dimmable but gives a nice bright warm white light.

Asda prices are normally all the same across the UK.

...but sometimes in-store and online prices differ (not just with Asda).

Re: Asda now selling 100W equivalent LED GLS lamps
They are £11.25 in my local ASDA. I've just bought one and it works well; the light seems a bit whiter than tungsten. Holding my Long Wave tranny near the lamp detects some RFI at the bottom of the band but it's less than the noise from my computer in the same room and the buzzing from something in the house next door.
They also had a 15W version, which looks of different manufacture, for £8 or £8.50 but the stock on the shelf was all Edison Screw base. |

Got a 12W one from CPC
PRO ELEC HK-LD582A-BC 12W GLS LED Lamp BC 3000k Warm White 1200Lm Very impressed. But I don't think it'll last its 30,000 hours - it's quite hot to the touch. |

Re: Asda now selling 100W equivalent LED GLS lamps
I've just installed a 10W led strip light above my bench and it's absolutely amazing. Very bright, clear natural white light (not warm white, which I don't like in a workshop). Made in China by Litetron. Up close with an AM radio there is a strong buzz, but it doesn't escape along the mains lead at all so it leaves my radios alone. Runs barely warm. Like Refugee's (above) they come with link-leads so you can daisy-chain them.

Performance is very impressive (so far!). It's surprisingly light though, weighing a mere 70g as opposed to the Osram "60W" (10W, 810lm) ones I mentioned in posts 6 and 8, which weigh in at a hefty 150g. Anyone care to speculate why? N. |
