Default Ingersoll XK-120

Recently when I was looking for a small B & W solid state set I found this TV was available, but having to go to Stafford to pick it up put me off.

Just last week I found it was available & decided it was worth the journey.

It's nothing to get too excited about, but it performs as designed, thanks to the previous member giving it some TLC, he had some other nice sets he had restored but needed to find a home for this one.

This model was sold under a few different names, including Prinz & Waltham.

About the only issue is getting rid off a slight cigarette smoke smell from it, not overpowering but just enough to notice.

I've tried carefully rubbed down the case with a odour removing spray, trying not to get any inside, which has helped but not totally removed it.

Nice little Tv, I used to have an Ingersoll TV/radio/cassette combo thing, with a 5" CRT, found it dumped in a bush on the way home from school many years ago!

Here's how I sort out smelly telly's!!

Regards,
Lloyd

Foaming cleaner is as good as anything for shifting tobacco gunge, but you may need to do the inside of the cabinet and even the tube to get rid of the smell completely.

It's the guts that stink more than the cabinet. The CRT, LOPT and surrounding components are prime causes. It creeps out as the chassis warms up.

Mind you, it's better than cat pee! J.

Thanks, I first heard of an Ingersoll TV when I spotted one in a someone's online collection of old technology, they also had a nearly identical Boots branded one, which suggests they were badge engineered for various companies.

Normally watches are Ingersoll's normal fare.

Yes I've read the various threads on dirty electrical items here with feelings swaying between laughter & disgust.

12" B&W portables were imported in very large numbers in the first half of the 80s. They were relatively cheap, and people bought them for use in kitchens and bedrooms. Many of them had a blanking plate covering a hole where the VHF tuner would have been on non UK variants. I had one branded 'Network' but all the chains and sheds had their own brands (Prinz was Dixons).

The Ingersoll brand was used on a lot of cheap imported consumer electronics in the 80s.

While the facia on mine covers up the missing VHF tuner well, I've found a picture of a Swiss Waltham version with 2 tuners.

Network products were sold by Argos in the early 1980s, I'll have to check the online catalogues to see if there's a Network branded version.

The set coped well as I watched "Sorry Wrong Number" which I recorded earlier in the week.

The only issue I've noticed is loosing a slither of picture from each edge, not a massive problem but slightly distracting.

The controls on the back for controlling picture are the usual V & H hold, along with V line & V height, but I'm unwilling to "upset the apple cart" by adjusting any of them.

They are normally set up with quite a bit of overscan. This was fine at the time they were made, but digital displays have largely eliminated the 'safe area' concept so overscanning can be a problem, especially if 16:9 transmissions are being zoomed to 4:3.

I was thinking it was something like that, though my Grattans 5 Inch set shows a little more around each edge when fed from the same source.

I'll have to test it on a native 4:3 source to see how it looks.

Nice to see another monochrome portable up and running. I have a fondness for these especially if you are stuck for space or for what ever reason you don't want to get into the full restoration of a larger older set. They are usually easy to fix and dont cost an arm and a leg in obtaining parts. A nice little earner I had with these years ago was converting these to 5.5mHz sound for long distant lorry drivers to use on the Continent. Except France of course (6.5mHz AM). Often all that was needed was a small DPDT slide switch. One half was used to to switch between the original 6mHz ceramic filter to a 5.5 one. The other half of the switch would switch in a small capacitor across the detector coil just to bring it down to 5.5. These guys told me that often late at night what ever country the were parked up in they would find an English or American film with the sound in English but foreign subtitles.

Alan.

That's very interesting, I did wonder what was needed to switch between 5.5 & 6MHz sound separations, someone did mention in another thread about converting imported sets to work in the UK before adaptors were available.

The lorry drivers would have been limited to picking up channels on UHF, though I've seen 1-2 of the smaller (under 10 inch screen) portables with VHF tuners & sometimes a factory fitted system B/G - I switch.

I've managed to find pictures of Prinz & Waltham badged versions.

When I was trying to look up information I ended up finding lots of sites about classic Jaguars because of the model number XK-120.
