Default Telefunken Rondo 101. No idea what I’m doing, please help!

Hi,

I have a Telefunken Rondo 101 (see attached photos) which was originally my parents but they left it to rot in their loft until I found it and saved it. The head was snapped off and the turntable wouldn’t stop when turned on but I found an amazing guy who fixed it for me and to be honest I haven’t used it all that much since then.

I recently bought some records from a charity shop and was having a lovely time this morning playing them when suddenly it went quiet. I had a look and the needle was just sliding to the end of the record every time I moved it but I also found some broken bits of something on the record (pic attached) and have no idea what it is or how to fix it. Can someone please help a complete idiot please

It looks like a broken stylus and is consistent with the tone arm sliding to the centre.
You will need to identify the type of cartridge fitted first.
I can't see ny name on the deck - does it say Dual or Telefunken anywhere with a model number? It's a nice unit.

Although Edward is quite correct in saying it is consistent with a damaged stylus it is odd that this would happen spontaneously. It is difficult to see but it looks as though the stylus is still in place.

Could you get a closer photograph of the stylus and the broken bits?

I’ve managed to get the cartridge out and I think that stylus does indeed need replacing as by comparing it to pictures on google a black bit appears to be missing from the middle, does that sounds right?

Looks like the suspension has gone brittle and fallen apart, if that's the case a replacement for the cartridge will be required.

Lawrence.

Sorry to say, it is the 'cartridge' that has failed. The little black pieces are the cartridge yolk that the stylus fits in. Replacing just the stylus will not solve the problem...
I am not familiar with that model, so others may know a way to restore the yoke. If not, unfortunately, it will need a new cartridge.

That looks like it could be a Dual turntable. The cartridge is unknown and fitting a replacement could be challenging.

When you removed the cartridge, did you have to remove the four wires or did it just clip in?

Again, it's difficult to see clearly but it looks as though there are some terminals under the part with 518 printed on it

It is all Telefunken.
TW 509 player and either a Telefunken T23 or T25 cartridge. A quick google finds them still for sale in Europe at about €40 - 50.

It looks like a fairly standard half inch mount ceramic cartridge, which could widen the possible options for replacement types to include other makers.

A Chinese red'n'black WITH its mounting clip may even work.

If the connections are made with a dedicated connector rather than individual tags, though, some extra soldering work and new tags would be needed.

That looks a right bit of gear, left to rot indeed, I am cringing.

Given the OP's candour in the first post, I'd guess we're looking at a replacement via eBay. replace in reverse order, but as the "new" one is likely to be quite old, I'd keep any receipts given. Good listening.
