The point is they're asking £150 for it as they are entitled to, if it doesn't sell and gets dumped in a skip then that's what will happen, apart from no sale it's no big deal, I junk stuff all the time, just junked a chainsaw that was basically working, often it's much less hassle that way, I could have advertised it for sale describing it's condition, I would have valued and advertised it at (funnily enough) £150 but I know from experience that folks would be picking over it like a bunch of diagnostic vultures..."Yes mate but the chain catcher's missing"...."Yes but it needs the pull cord sorting out"..."Yes but I wanted a red one"...."Yes but it's not new is it?" (now there's a revelation...)

Been there done that, no thanks.

Lawrence.

If I gave something to a charity shop, they overpriced it and subsequently dumped it, I would be quite annoyed as the charity would be deprived of the money they might otherwise get if the item had been sensibly priced.

Wife takes stuff to a charity shop, it's quicker than going to the dump, if the charity shop dumped half of it she would still take stuff there as it's more convenient.

Maybe they sold a similar looking radio for a similar price and they used that price as a benchmark.

I assist with valuation and pricing of technical items for a local charity shop. Most such items tend to be cameras and binoculars. In order to avoid subsequent customer complaints, I carry out a functional check for jammed shutters, damaged lenses etc. I'll then base a price on typical eBay sold prices, but recognising that a feasible price in a charity shop may be only, say, 60-70% of that achieved on eBay and perhaps 30-50% of that charged by a specialist dealer who will also generally offer a warranty. Otherwise, why would customers come to charity shops?

I'm reassured that my approach generally results in timely sales and no 'skipping'. I have of course got my own personal 'skip' for items that are worthless without a repair. Some call it the 'round tuit' shelf!

Part of the job of course is to look out for the odd valuable Leica or Rolleiflex which would then be sold separately through a specialist dealer or auction house. Interestingly, I don't think I've ever come across a valve radio: this Ekco would be a real rarity, perhaps originating in a house clearance. That would present me with a real problem because of the safety issues: maybe cutting off the mains lead and selling as 'for decoration only' would be a solution.

Like I'm sure many other forum members, I'm of course also a regular customer of charity shops myself and have noted curiously random pricing, mainly through ignorance. Or sometimes, particularly with vinyl records, it'll be clear that they've called in an 'expert-with-a-book' and set high prices that only a specialist dealer could be expected to achieve. That's frustrating because the volunteer at the counter rarely has price-negotiating authority. If it's something I really want, then I may sometimes pay the price whilst convincing myself that the excess is at least going to a worthy cause.

I once told a rather officious person [here in Bexhill] that a book on sale was very overpriced-this was quite a few years ago! He was a jobsworth who would never budge on anything and insisted that the prices were set by an "expert" dealer. I said that we used to have such an establishment in town. If the Charity Shop was now a Book Dealership, they should be prepared to negotiate [as per the previous business that always did] and that the clue was in the name. He wasn't very compliant I bet the book was pulped.

That's right, I saw a Bush TV22 change hands for about £300 at a radio rally some years ago but with the advent of the internet people have been looking in their lofts and the number available has steadily increased - except pre war sets of course.

With reference to the original post, I regularly see radios for sale with up-to-date PAT test stickers on them, and yet the insides are fossilised under decades of authentic grime.

Presumably someone has come along with an insulation tester and done a 5 second test without bothering to remove the back. I hope no one buys these expecting them to work first time with no restoration.

Portable Appliance Tests; Ha.
A few years back, I had to get a reputable company in to do our testing, as my technicians were maxed out.
The company sent two testers, who processed nearly 2000 items in seven working hours; thats ten days faster than my techs could do it, but my lads did things by the book.

There is a visual element to Portable Appliance Testing, but I suspect the training doesn’t include equipment older than the person testing the equipment.

For that price I'd expect:Stereo, Plays CD's, Blue Tooth Enabled and make Toasted Cheese & Onion Sandwiches.

Thinking about it......Don't the Chinese make a reproduction model like that with those facilities for £15.99 ?

I have asked a couple of times how charity shops price up items and invariably they reply that they take prices from ebay.

What people ask for sets and what they sell for are two entirely different prices.

I often try to barter when I see something in a charity shop seriously over priced
- such as 78RPM records - but they rarely budge. Oh well, their loss.

Sorry but this is something that irks me. The cream of donations is inavariably picked off and only the rubbish gets offered for sale in the shops. Joe Public doesn't get his nose in for a pop at anything decent that has been given to the shops in good faith.
