Default Marconi record player from the 50's-60's

Hi everyone,
I am hoping you could help me with some advice.
I just bought a Marconi 1003 record player in a case, after inspection it has a stamp underneath that reads Audio Tool and Engineering 950A.

Do you think the name is different because parts have been changed?
when I turn it on to play a record I have to initiate the spin with my hand. There is a loud hum coming from what might be the motor, the box on the left.

Lastly, I get needle sound from the needle on the record, but nothing from the speakers. the tube lights up, maybe an amplifier problem? I did a visual check of the wire and solders and they seem to be okay.

Thoughts?

Google shows it to be a Canadian model and it could be any player deck. Photo of the top side may help identification. Remember we are a UK based group and may not have ever seen one if only produced for your home market..

Stylus chatter, no output and only one valve strongly suggests defunct high output crystal cartridge. Potentially a can of worms as these are no longer made.

It appears to be a 78 only player unless the deck has been replaced, and is a live chassis machine with 25(!) or 60 Hz motors. I wonder whether a 25Hz motor would hum a lot on 60Hz or just spin over twice as fast?

Schematic is on Elektrotanya, though you can see pretty much what gives in the Radiomuseum thumbnail.
