I hope that figure is correct because I can't believe someone paid £4,800 for lot 11 http://www.bonhams.com/eur/auction/19034/lot/11/

I know green bakelite phones command a high price but not this much particularly for one with cosmetic faults - one too many zeros maybe?

That figure is correct Alvin - we had the world record for a green 232 in the last sale here at £6,700. This one had a tiny chip to the cradle, so went for a bit less. Green and red phones in excellent/mint condition are top drawer at the moment, and I have another 700+ phones at the warehouse to sell of one sale at a time.

Note - The buyer of the 702 was ME!!

Only joking, he is not from the UK. I am hoping to gain permission to post country and possibly a name, but until then, I follow our policy of keeping all client's details confidential. Thanks for your understanding.

Shame it's going overseas, especially considering that the country it's going to probably never had a 405 line service so it isn't a part of their history.

Maybe one day some of these sets will come home ...

An American buyer, according to this newly-published Daily Mail article:

Forum members will know that the fire at Crystal Palace did not interrupt TV service from Alexandra Palace but a pity Daily Mail reporter got it wrong.

Also "TV Pioneer John Logie Baird" had little or nothing to do with this set or with Alexandra Palace transmissions. He had been sidelined to his personal laboratories in Crescent Wood Road: Captain A D G West was responsible for the Baird 240 line system.

I had suggested to several forum members that it was my guess ithat the 702 would bring £18,000.
I was £1600 over enthusiastic. J.

At that price a replica is cheaper!

Is it about £450 to get a custom CRT made?

Based on devaluation/inflation, £100 spent in 1936 is about £2,000 to £6,000 today? So 17,000 / 4,000 = 4.25x value, not 168x value as might appear.

Somehow I think a 2011 £400 HDTV LCD is unlikely to be worth 4x more in real terms for your (great) grand children.

I'd guess most 1950s TVs are still worth less in real terms today than what was paid for them?

Using that invaluable site: http://www.measuringworth.com/ukcompare/ we can see that £99 in 1936 (cost fo the set when new) is equivalent to about £5K using RPI and £19K using average earnings. This also shows how average earnings have increased compared to the RPI.

I don't think you can get a custom CRT made. A rebuild of a pre-war CRT is about £700 from RACS.

Another place for us TV enthusiast to visit. Slightly annoying website: http://www.mztv.com/ The museum owner is Moses Znaimer, a veteran of broadcasting in Canada http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moses_Znaimer
