Default Hammerite from a TIN (hammered finish).

Hi Folks.
Question.
Does anyone know whether Hammerite (hammered finish) applied from a tin (brushed on) leaves brush marks?
I was thinking of trying it on a Taylor 65b steel cabinet seriously in need of a repaint and would prefer not to use an aerosol if possible.

Use a decent quality brush and proper, even strokes and it's fine. In fact it has a tendency to 'devolve' into the hammered finish no matter what you do to it!

Agreed. It helps to practice a little first on some scrap though - it's a 'strange' paint to use, so it's useful to 'test' how it works.

I've always found, work quickly, apply a heavy coat, and don't be tempted to brush it out too much, or to go back to touch anything up - get it right on the first pass as it were.

Seconded. Only problem I ever had was cleaning the brush afterwards. Use one you're prepared to lose.

Cellulose thinner works well

Definitely no brush marks.
They disappear almost immediately when the hammer finish forms.

I used it to restore the case on a Taylor valve tester. Absolutely no problem at all applying with a brush. No evidence at all of brush strokes.

As others have said, apply it thickly and don't try to brush it out! It can be tricky to get a smooth covering when doing large surfaces, as the join between the bit you painted a minute ago and the bit you're painting now sometimes 'tears up' along the surface of the earlier painted part.

Personally I'm not a fan of Hammerite: even when used with the official Hammerite primer it dries to a very hard coating, meaning brittle and prone to chipping.

I love the way the finish turned out! It looks as fine as factory finish.
I've only seen that finish available in an Aerosol can.

It was a brand new tin of paint and a new brush.
The instrument came up nicely too with a lovely bright magic eye.

What was the colour of the hammerite paint you used. Looks identical to what I need for a valve tester casing and another few bits of test equipment with flaking paint.
Many thanks,
Christopher Capener

It was silver grey bought from Wilco.
It is the most common shade as far as I know.

It does if you apply more than one coat. If your painting untreated steel, your fine, but aliminium needs an etching primer. You can rub it back too with steel wool to finesse the hammer finish.

You need a thinner based on Xylene. You can usually get the thinner from the source of the paint. No problem cleaning the brush then.

Xylene is getting hard to find locally but it is a very good solvent if you are prepared to put up with the smell.

You're not wrong there. I seem to recall it being a constituent of PCB conformal coating. My lab was on the top floor and the fumes caused me to open the window even in the winter!

It most certainly does let you know that ventilation is needed.

For thinning Hammerite paint and cleaning brushes, I always use acetone; does the job well; useful for many other tasks; not a difficult chemical to obtain.

I used to use hundreds of gallons of Hammerite at work, there was indeed a special thinner for it, Xylene/Toluene mix IIRC, I know one thing, it didn't like cellulose,it used to go like a jelly in the gun, it didn't come off anything very well with cellulose thinner.
