Thanks to everyone concerned for another splendid day out at WB. I managed to come home with wallet relatively intact; a few bits sold on the Bring-and-buy, a few bits bought to keep up stocks.
It was a privilege to be in the crowd of usual auction die-hards, listening to Mike B knocking out the bargains. Still reeling from the spectacle of a 1939 Ecko TV going for £5200! A bit out of my league I am afraid. Lots of bargains though...
see you all next year if not before.

Another great day at Wootten Bassett met lots of people good food and a very interesting auction. I came away with a slightly lighter wallet, Could not believe that 1939 Ecko TV going for £5200. Also had a glimps inside one of those RCA ctv's.
Thanks to everyone involved a brilliant day.

Today was my first ever attendance at a BVWS event and I was really impressed. The atmosphere was really good and everything seemed very well run, especially the auction. Mike did an amazing job getting through such an epic number of lots in good humour.

I made a few purchases, definitely at the bargain end of the scale, but feel I've done very well in the kilograms-per-pound-sterling stakes!

Thanks to all involved in organising the day - it felt well worth the 300-mile round trip from Cambridge.

I think a good time had by all! May I echo the thanks to all the organisers for a splendid event.

The auction provided excitement and bargains, and I managed to get a TV ( not the pre war Ekco) - did a forum member get this?

My only disappointment of the day was having to travel the final 200 miles of my journey home on the back of a breakdown truck!

So it was you!

A few of us were standing at the back, watching intently to see who was bidding, and managed to identify you. Didn't see who the under-bidder was though.

Jon, congratulations on your pre-war TV. Interesting to see that the MBL auction didn't seem to depress the price of pre-war sets.

It was a great day out with the usual friendly welcome. It was good to meet up with so many friends. I enjoyed the auction conducted by Mike with his usual professionalism and good humour, and was pleased to come away with a Hallicrafters SX-25 with its correct matching speaker.

I was too far forward in the hall to see Jon make his winning bid on the Ekco TV but now I know why he was so happy after the auction. It has gone to a good home.

Thanks to all those whose hard work made this day possible.

I know where you are Jon. That TV may vanish....

Seriously though, well done old boy. And a good 'do' all round. Thanks to all involved and all that jazz.

Cheers,

Steve P + Dilys.

Well done John, it has indeed gone to a good home.

I will echo others in the fact that I had a superb day too and the home cooked nosh was well received! I managed to get rid of two items on the bring and buy stall but spent too much in the auction and came away with a total of 6 items!

It was nice to meet others again and put more names to faces, there was also a great comedy moment at the end where somebody thought it would be a good idea to plug one of their acquisitions in to the mains socket, it went BANG! and fused the whole building

A great day out, well done to all involved

Cheers

Hmmm .. you've never tried lifting one ! The reason the photo shows it on the floor is simply I didn't have enough strength left to lift it onto the HMV2805 (the 26" Pye-697-based Dynatron colour set I mentioned to you is significantly lighter!).

Anyhow, a good day out and got to meet up with a few friends. The event seemed to be particularly busy too.

And thanks Taz and Brian for helping me get the little Decca in the boot of the car (where the Decca still resides!).

And a special mention for the trainee junior electrician for reassuring us in this safety conscious era that the emergency lighting was fully functional and the main circuit breaker was in first class condition.

TTFN,
Jon

I think the auction takings were the highest yet for a WB swapmeet auction (not including special auctions). The pre-war telly for over £5000 obviously helped that, as did the spy set for around £1400 and three round Ekcos at £600-£800 each. With 200 lots it was certainly one of the biggest too, and I for one (up on the stage) welcomed the break half way through.

I believe there were over 180 paying attendees, plus committee and helpers. The kitchen had their best day ever too.

It's certainly my favourite venue - even though Harpenden's just up the road from me.

I bought a nice Grundig radio within minutes of arriving but apart from som electrolytics, managed to avoid anything else lest I was unable to have room for all the courier work I was doing!

A good event all round.

I really feel that Wooton Basset has matured into an exceptionally pleasant and well run event. The size of the hall coupled with the large turn-out of members adds to the intimate feel of these events where like-minded people come to buy, sell and socialise. The atmosphere seems more relaxed and cheerful than the Harpenden events where the large hall is very difficult to fill and can seem, at times, somewhat cold and characterless.
Yes, the bi-annual events at Wooton really give us all something special to look forward to, best wishes to all involved.
P.S. Jon - I think that we are all looking forward to a detailed write-up about the Ekco television on "the valve page", it couldn't have gone to a better collector .

I must echo the comments about WB. I have not yet been to any other BVWS meets but I will make a bit more effort to do so although they will have to be super-duper to compete with WB, especially the atmosphere and catering! Unfortunately, I had to leave after the first 50 or so auction lots so missed all the real drama - congratulations Jon, on your pre-war tele and I too look forward to the write-up on your website. Thanks Mike and helpers, for a really good venue.
Cheers

Sorry I couldn't get to WB, it's always a good and friendly event, complete with Mike's mum's cakes. Family event in Eastbourne took priority.

Brian, you WILL be coming to the March Harpenden because Iain Baird is coming down from Bradford to give a talk. This may be the first time I've mentioned that in public. More details nearer the time.

Jon, I think you should donate that 7" Ekco receiver to the Ekco preservation Society down in West Sussex. They will take very good care of it..Those CRM71 tubes are thinner than a test tube and will implode at the slightest touch. So messy..
All the very best with it. They give a cracking picture.
Great day, good laugh, Loved the black out! I could not believe a Roberts MB could make such a pop! 100 amps of flash! I think the ulitity company are still digging up the street. What a cold day. Rained all the way up and all the way back. By for now. John.

Yep, it was an unassuming little Roberts RMB with some additional pink wiring emerging from the mains plug which I'm guessing earthed the chassis. It wouldn't have survived 100A though, more likely 100mA of earth leakage taking out the RCD....

It had actually been bought in the auction by my friend Andy, though it wasn't him or me that plugged it in, or even suggested plugging it in..... I'll be repairing it shortly.

It won't happen again though, and the subject of a UPS for the computer system has already been mentioned.
