Default Philips 834A base finish ?

Any one know what the original finish was on the wooden base? I have just bought this set with a bad attack of wood worm. The base had been given a thick coat of black paint. Was the set painted underneath?

De bottom was not painted.
Only the upper and border side.
The totall border side ( what's in sight) was panted with a
( not to much)shiny oldblack paint ..
The upper side was painted with a black paint that was allso used (in the old days) for a schoolboard.A deep greyblack paint that gives a rough toplaer so you could easy write onn it.
