Sony C5 Betamax - Colour Playback Issue - UK Vintage Radio Repair and Restoration Discussion Forum

Hi all,

Wonder if anyone has seen this one before:

Found a nice, boxed Sony C5 Betamax machine a while back and finally got round to awakening it yesterday. Did the usual cleaning, lubing and servo-board capacitor replacing and it works pretty well. With the exception of a colour issue that I have never seen before. As per the attached pictures, there is a vertical band at the right of the picture (about 20 pixels) that are not coloured in (!). I have checked the tape on other betas and it is definitely playback on the C5 that is causing the issue.

Any ideas?

Have you tried the recorder through a different TV set?

It looks exactly like an oscillator running out of steam just before the end of each line, then getting kicked back into action during the horizontal blanking interval.

Hi your problem is just an agustment on the y-c6 board the pot marked afc on the big board at the bottom its right next to the white connector that should sort it out i fixd one today with that problem

If the AFC was out of adjustment, wouldn't the picture have no colour at all? I had a no-colour issue on my Sanyo VTC 9350 and an AFC adjustment did the trick.

Hi again. Just to confirm the AFC adjustment DID fix my issue. If I adjust AFC too much the picture actually starts rolling but a tweak moved the colour 'coverage' like I needed.
