What are the different variants? I can only off the top of my head think of 5.

Actually, the differences I have seen are only related to the top resistance board (Or Volt former board). From early models with just wound shunts, then hand wound resistors and the introduction of wound coils in various combination and then the resistors......it just goes on!

I see, so not variants as such, just different components used from time to time?

Andy, I now recall i posted details of Meter 769-2929 on the survey thread, starting at Page 72, Post No.1438 onwards. These notes are preferable to the handwritten ones, which are a bit muddled. (searching on 769-2929 i the quickest way to access it i imagine)

The peg at the rear of the early type nickel plated Z screw appears to be glass, i assume this is to prevent touching the screw with a finger affecting the needle deflection. It does look a bit fragile though, replacing the movement is delicate!

Thank you Dave, I shall compare your detailed notes with my instrument.

Acquired two AVO9 SX's and both with cases with serial numbers:

5222-1S-263 which will be February 1963.

5573-1S-163 which will be January 1963.

Both are still accurate and look as if they have never been used out of their cases.

Multimeter Survey 3rd Edition.

Finally got round to finishing this Edition of the Multimeter Survey.
Thanks to everybody still contributing Numbers and Information.

A little behind schedule, but have had very little Time recently to spend
on this, but it's ready now.

I'm trying to make it a bit more interesting and informative than simply a
long list of Numbers and this is the first attempt at expanding it's scope
some what. It is significantly updated from the previous Edition.

Comments and suggestions most welcome as always.
Hope the Forum find this useful or informative.

Ian,

Very many thanks for the work you have done on this survey. Even at a quick assessment it makes very interesting reading and I can see that I have a few numbers I should be contributing.

Noble work Ian. Steve (SPCh) would have been so pleased that all this data was finally captured for posterity.
Thanks you for this very thorough effort.

Please find attached an update to the Model 40 Data.

I don't know if anybody actually uses the Survey Data, but I
use it occasionally and noticed the Model 40, 47A Data ect wasn't
sorted correctly, so the Years were a bit jumbled about.

So I have reproduced the Model 40 Data here as an update.

For the future, I have also removed a number of entries where Meters
had no Serial Numbers logged as it seemed a bit pointless having them
included.

Sorry for any inconvenience

Thanks for your efforts Ian.

It may be of interest to note that an Avominor Type E testmeter has just come up for sale elsewhere, s/n E157-1954, indicating that the Type E was still being made in 1954. (It also supports my assertion that more than one sequence of serial numbers was allocated to the 'E', No.157 being an unsuitably low number for a meter that had been in production for 14 years!)

This meter is highly likely to have the additional back-board inside, loaded with component resistors. (Good longevity but poor access until the board is removed.)

Also of interest is a RAF label announcing that the meter requires attention but is repairable- either by an approved RAF facility or an approved outside contractor. The fault mentioned is an error of 2% on the 20mA range- and the date on the label is 1970.

Yet another piece of WW2 spec equipment that the RAF carried on using for quite some time, then.. The generation of a repair request on the basis of a 2% error seems excessive to me - (on such a small meter.)

That baffled me too, especially considering the accuracy at FSD as it is anyway!

Silly question here, but the survey is just for Avo multi-meters isn't? Should I add All Wave Oscillators etc?

I may have 'missed the boat' for the survey, but for the sake of completion of your records, the AVO meters which I have in use are as follows:

Model 8 Mark III 22984.865
Model 7 11380-A-949
Model 8 Mark II 6555.C.1163.D (in green plastic case)
Model 8 Mark IV 64396 (in leather case)

Congratulations on completing such an epic task.
Best Wishes.

Good job Ian,

What I'll do is go through this document and see which meters of mine aren't in it, then add mine to the thread. This may take me some time though

In the order of which the model sections are listed within Superscope's PDF document, here are some serial numbers to add for the next revision of the survey. Some of this has been in my collection for some time, some have been within the past year.

  • 36 Range Model 5 - Serial from meter movement No. 104-3168
  • Model 7 Mk 1. Serial from movement scale No. 39538-A-253
  • Model 7 Mk 1. Serial from movement scale - No. 7345-20711
  • Model 7 Mk 1. Serial from movement scale - No. 71045-11405
  • Model 7 Mk 2. Serial from side sticker - 11492 7/6/76
  • Model 7x Panclimatic. Serial from movement scale - No. 90863-A-563
  • Model 40 Mk 1. Serial from movement scale - No. 9236-B-953
  • Model 40 Mk 1. Serial from movement scale - No. 5682-B-651
  • Model 40 Mk 1. Serial from movement scale - No. 2177-B-1148
  • Model 40 Mk 1. Serial from movement scale - No. 404178-443
  • Model 40 Mk 1. Serial from movement scale - No. 7818-B-1152
  • Model 40 Mk 2. Serial from side sticker - 81583 40/2/73
  • Model 40 Mk 2. Serial from movement scale - No. 24747-B-464
  • Model 40 Mk 2. Serial from movement scale - No. 310-B-661F
  • Model 40 Mk 2. Serial from movement scale - No. 17267-B-159

With one revision as follows;

Model 7 Mk 2 listed as 3922, I had made an error, the serial is in fact 39222. Serial from sticker on the side, date 4/71.

Murphy Maniac

Geoff, you certainly haven't missed the Boat!
This is an on going Project and hopefully will
continue for quite some time.

Thanks for the Numbers.

Sinewave

Again thanks for your Numbers and the useful addition of
where the Numbers were situated.

The introduction of the Label showing the Serial Number
instead of the Scaleplate seems, from the Data so collected,
to have started around March/April 1970.

Previously, I had only been logging AVO 8/9 Mk IV Serial locations,
and that is where the Date estimate is derived from.
This information is not currently shown on the Survey Document though.

But I have recently started to log Model 7 and 40's as well when identified.
Currently, I assume all AVO Meters would have started using
the Labels at the same time.
We may be able to narrow this Date down further if that information is provided
like you have done.

Regarding the addition of "All Wave Oscillators", the Survey
started off as a Multimeter only Survey, but I see no reason why
it shouldn't include other AVO products.

I have no problem including Data for other AVO products, if
that is what the Forum wants.

Comments on this are invited!

Ian, glad to be of assistance to this fantastic effort.

In fact from my list here and my own spreadsheet of my collection, it appears I do have Model 7's from the 1940's which I didn't think I had. I have collected so many over the years that I can't remember what I have!

In future revisions, would the likes of the Precision Avometer be entered into the Specialist section of the survey?

Aslo I'm wondering, would you see there being any value in entries detailing the presence of the PF sockets for the mk 1 models 7 and 40?
