Default Interesting one valve three-stage all bands receiver project

I've just come across an interesting all band receiver project covering 250 kHz to 16 Mhz using just one valve, but the valve in question is a G.E 6AF11 ‘compactron’ which in effect is three valves in one envelope - two triodes and a pentode. The design uses home-wound plug-in coils and featured in the American Popular Electronics magazine in January 1963. The designer was a member of G.E’s technical staff, and full constructional details are given, though you’ll need to go to the second link to find the coil winding data. From what I’ve gleaned on internet it seems to have been a popular and well regarded project:

I’d wondered if the 6AF11 was rare or expensive nowadays, but no - surprisingly perhaps, it’s available today at $6.96 from Tube Depot (and other sources). Not a bad price for what is really three valves in one:

It uses a 12-pin socket and I thought that too might be a problem, but no – new manufacture Compactron sockets are available on ebay from China for £3.12 each post free.

The valve ('tube') data can be found here:

I’m not thinking of building one any time soon, but I thought it might be of interest to others, as it is to me.

Even more fun using the pentode as an RF amplifier and then the triodes as detector and AF.

Reminds me of the Lowe 3NF valve from 1926 described as the worlds first integrated circuit, used in the Lowe one valve radio.
