I have been given this reel player, the rewind is very slow or stops altogether. It will turn with a little help.

Re: Akai 4000D
hello, may be worth checking the rubber idler that does rew, check its condition and that it is clean and dry, also worth roughing up with some fine sand paper. assuming also the drive belt is not slipping or slack.

Re: Akai 4000D
Usually four screws at the back and two screws at the bottom.
BTW the belt only drives the capstan, it has no effect on rewind or FF. |

I hope you don't mind this question, what is your experience & skill level on such machines? If you are having difficulty with removing the case you may have even greater difficulty in dealing with the more complex mechanism inside that may need dismantling and re-assembly.

Re: Akai 4000D
Another thing; does it play OK and consistently at the correct speed. If the motor capacitor is failing the motor may run but with reduced torque making the rewind problem worse. Play a tape (large spool nearly full) at the beginning and near the end - is it wowing? does it sound like the speed is correct?

Re: Akai 4000D
I have recorded and played a large tape and everything sounds ok. I have played a prerecorded tape that is only 5" spool and that plays good
