Have posted a couple extra but haven't succeeded in a worthwhile pic of the amp. From the previous pics it'l be seen to be small enough, if amateurish board which several sharp eyes have spotted

Best I can do by way of pics, David. Cabinet and diode Admittedly the diode is a white blob as I failed to capture the markings, but I assure you they are those I've posted - there aren't many unless there are some on the dark side of the moon as it were.

From the several online Silvertone models, I cannot see one similar to yours.

Indeed David, looks like a botch job. I feel I'm tying up too much of folks' time on this and am happy to leave it aside while I work out (try) the circuitry hoping it's pretty standard. Then I'll be back asking how to understand oscillatory circuits as used to erase heads eg do they use the head winding as the 'coil' and how etc. I have a basic head picture of a simple valve oscillator

I wouldn't worry about people's time. Folk here enjoy a discussion.
Now here's a thought, but first a little background information. Back in the early '60s I bought (probably from a PW advert) a tape recorder case marked Regentone. I've used it to hold various decks since then but if I constructed a finished tape recorder in it, it wouldn't be a Regentone.
Maybe Silvertone cabinets were flogged off as surplus at a similar time and someone snapped it up along with an easily-available deck and rustled-up electronics based on a commercial design. We'll probably never know but getting it working nicely seems highly possible so good luck.

Thanks for the encouragement. Regentone is a brand which occurs in the auction site and usually within my (junker) price range. Must pay closer attention to the next one comes along

Now we can see the most recent photos, is that not an EM81?

Well spotted Edward, good eyesight ! I assume you must mean the shape of the window between the volume and tone controls, if so definitely not an EM 84 but hard (for me anyway) to say if an EM 81 or EM 80 or other similar Magic Eye valve.

Never experienced it myself but yes from many reports failed Selenium bridge rectifiers can stink strongly.
Yes, and trouble was they cost 4/6d each - for a TV costing 1/s from the Scouts Jumble Sale
