Default Pye achoic 1005 transistorised. Hot volume knob and buzzing noise

My Pye Achoic has developed a hot volume control knob and a buzzing noise. This noise happens approximately twenty minutes after turning the record player on. Has anybody on this forum experienced the same problem?

Thanks.

Hi there,
I'm struggling to understand how the volume pot is becoming hot, considering the typical nature of most vintage record player circuits, unless there's somethng radically wrong. The only thing I can think of is to check the chassis for "LIVE", and check to see what voltages are flowing to earth which maybe causing the framework to heat up. As regards the delayed hum on warm up, then you've either got a dodgy capacitor on the output stage or a resistor is going low somewere.

Hot knob, oo-er missus! Still, as faults go that's a new one!

Seriously now, these players usually had a valve amp crammed onto a metal chassis, they did get pretty hot in use - and twenty mins is more than enough for a warmup time. Could it be possible that the thing is just acting normally? Another matter is if it is literally too hot to touch, that might be cause for concern.

If of course the amplifier has never been serviced and has those horrible hunts capacitors in it, that could cause it to overheat.

You need to dismantle the player remove the amplifier and inspect it.

If there are any brown or black Hunts capacitors, they will need replacing.

Thank you Forum for all for your projected diagnostics. This problem only developed when I was using it on a particularly hot summers day, if this adds any logic to the possible culprit.

I have not serviced the amp since I have had it Maurice.

Hi,
If the volume control is combined with the mains on/off switch, I wonder if it's not closing fully and arcing at the contacts? This would cause heat which could be conducted along the shaft, and also create buzzing noises, possibly.
Cheers, Pete.

Whatever's causing it, don't use the machine again until it's sorted!!

Hi all,
It certainly looks very much like the Pye 1005, acording to the radio museum search it incorparates 16 transistors, and 6 loudspeakers developed for stereo projection .

Is it just the On/Off pot that is getting warm? Are the others doing it too?
When the fault occurs, have a prod with the meter around the bridge rectifier - it may be breaking down.
Try disconnecting each side in turn - they are the same - and see if the fault clears.
Smoothers OK?
Leakage across the board when it gets warm?

Cheers,

Steve P.
