thanks Paul, it all looks contemporary for its age , not a homebuilt job and why would someone go to all the trouble re manufacture a radio , also the speaker raised moulding is the same shapes as vidor but not flat as the regatta, as you suggested could vidor have re fitted it with a modern transistor workings be nice if we could pin this down [ what a can of worms ] Bob

Hi Barry, thanks for that info to think this thread started with my enquiry for the battery sizes Bob

Hi Barry,

It took me about forty years to meet one too! The deck's a BA1, seen here in my 1956 Cossor transistor portable - note the wire-wound preset as speed control - and also used in the Roberts Mayflower, https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...ad.php?t=10777 .

Could you add that to the Garrard ID sticky thread in the record players section, Paul?

Nick.

It is a speed control then, I thought I could trace the wires to the motor.
Certainly something a bit different.

Hello Nick,

Gladly - I'll take a better photo by daylight probably tomorrow, and post it with a scan of the instruction card / strobe disc.

Thanks all for the replys, do you think it is a vidor manufactured player, and if so would it be of some value , as I was going to use it on camping trips In our old 1956 vw camper van and wouldnt want to loose or damage it if it is a part of record player history bob ps any ideas on the battery sizes

Please don't worry about using it as intended, I think that's a great idea. In any case compared with the astronomical "value" of your camper I doubt it's in the same league even relatively speaking.

I'm not sure you could get "agreed value" insurance on an old record player, though

Battery wise, those clips could fit either PP9 or PP1 size- you need to know which 'cos PP9 is 9V and PP1 is 6V.

I don't know whether either the PP1 or PP9 existed when this model was made - the Pam 710 was probably still the only commercial British transistor radio, and that uses 'D' cells. It looks from the photo as though the battery connectors may be wired in parallel (positive to positive, negative to negative) in which case they may have replaced connectors for a series pair of 4.5 volt AD38s as in my little Cossor player. A shame again that there's no internal label quoting battery types among other information, as there usually is in Vidor products.

Someone has retrofitted a transistor amplifier in place of the original valve one.
I would guess because of the older batteries becoming scarce.

I've wondered myself about that possibility, but as far as we know nobody has seen a valved example of this player: we've 1956 as its launch date, by which time it would have been competing with transistorised players costing far less to run; and there's the question of how the motor would have been supplied, when the usual BA1 seems to have used a 9 volt supply and a valve amplifier would have required less than that for LT - no more than 4.5 volts if it had just two valves.

I can't see any sign in the first photo in post 9 that the chassis holes for valve sockets were ever occupied, but Bob may be able to correct my impression there.

It's all conjecture so far, but my guess would be that Vidor may have had a valve 45 player in development before switching to transistors at a late stage, then not proceeding to full production with that design either.

Paul

More pics for you Paul, thanks for the information. And Chris, I know what you mean about the vw prices, I couldn't afford to buy one now. My first was £5000 and have always had one since.

Thanks, Bob. So, valve sockets are there and appear to have solder on their pins: the mystery deepens! I'm still not aware of evidence for the CN438's existence outside the 1956 Radio Show catalogue, so we don't yet know whether more were made than were required for a display at the show, in which case they may have been works in progress: it wasn't unheard of for empty cabinets to be put on display there to represent the coming season's models. The Roberts player seems never to have reached the shops, and I only know of one surviving example.

Perhaps this one's going to stay a mystery unless and until another CN438 turns up, or further definite details of the model, or someone recognises the transistor amplifier from a different piece of equipment.

Still unable to find any more information if it is an original vidor product. However the speaker plastic cover seems to be the only one traceable, and not found on any other radio or record player, plus the period Garrard deck from the 1956 era seems to point to a vidor product. Can anyone else add any thoughts bob

Default vidor battery record player

Managed to get a picture and sales catalogue details thanks to Bill (Batterymaker) and Mark Johnson of attache radios and it is the very same as the one as discussed some time ago.

Thanks for the pictures guys.

It looks like the same Garrard BA1 deck as the KB NRP11 https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/kolsterbr_nrp11.html
It works on a 7.5 volt battery and has a variable resistor to set the speed as the voltage runs down.

Sorry, just looked up the specs of my KB NRP11, the motor is 4.5 volt, hence the variable resistor, and the 3 transistor amplifier is 7.5v, but it is claimed to work down to 5 volts.
Motor is 70mA at 4.5v.
The battery used in the KB was a Ever Ready AD42 or Vidor L5058
