Default Sharp GF-9595 muffled sound

Hi I have a Sharp GF 9595 both radio and cassette player are working but the sound is muffled, turning the treble up has no affect, same goes for the bass control like it's set on a default flat setting The loudness switch also has no affect.

So I’m just wondering if anyone has come across this problem before?

Thank you

I take it this is on both radio and cassette? If it's only on cassette, clean the tape head.

What is it like on headphones?

One possibility is a lost common earth connection to the speakers so that what you are really hearing is the difference between the right and left channels being passed through both speakers.

Also, with an unimportant non-protected tape in (or with no tape in and the record-protect defeated with a fingertip) try exercising the record-play switch a hundred times or so. If that changes the nature of the fault, you'll need to clean the record-play switch.
