Yes, the deal breaker for these one valvers is usually the cartridge nowadays, sadly. There are ways round this, but they're no cheaper for most people.

Further to my earlier post re; Cheap cartridge on eBay - according to the listing, it has an output of 150-300mV, and tracks @ 5g., so a pre-amp. would definitely be needed to use this cart. with any one-valve record player. The stylus supplied with it is apparently a Sapphire type. Because of forum rules regarding eBay, I won't go into further detail, but the listing can be found by typing in 'ceramic pickup cartridges' into their search box.
