Sony Digimatic ICF3410L
Hi this is my first post. I have recently purchased this flip clock radio as I love the look of the Panasonic one off back to the future but didn’t want to spend 100 quid? It all works except the bulb that lights the flip numbers. I have metered it out and it seems less then 5w. Can anyone suggest where I could get one To complete my restoration?
I paid 30 quid for the unit. Does this seem over priced? |

Re: Sony Digimatic ICF3410L
What sort of bulb is it? Incandescent, neon, wire ended, screw cap (size), wedge base, festoon......
What voltage is fed to it? DC or AC? 5W would be well OTT for a clock backlight, less than a watt would be plenty. If it's made of unobtanium, something using LED(s) could be made to fit..... As to the price- well if it's in GWO and you're happy fair enough. If you want a market value, try looking for similar items' actual sold prices on Ebay though they can vary wildly depending on who wants something and how much, if someone else also does all bets are off!

Re: Sony Digimatic ICF3410L
Google 'grain of wheat bulb', but you will still need to work out the voltage. An LED conversion may be a better long term solution if you have the skills to do it.
£30 is top whack for a Sony flip digit clock radio, but not seriously OTT. |

Re: Sony Digimatic ICF3410L
How hard is the conversion? I am good at soldering! I re metered the wires and it’s like less then 1 watt. And anyone got any good methods for restoring the white plastic as it’s gone a bit yellow from the sun light. I saw someone restore one using “salon cream” and putting it out in the sunlight. But that was in the USA.

I don't see how you can measure watts without a load. How exactly are you performing the measurement?
Are there no ratings stated on the old lamp?

Re: Sony Digimatic ICF3410L
The age-yellowing of plastic is frequently reversible, yes: it's particularly a problem with things like computer-mice, video monitor casings, 1990s game-consoles etc. where flame-retardants in the plastic break down, causing the yellowing.
As you've searched out, there are various techniques to try and restore whiteness, usually based on Hydrogen Peroxide-containing cream with or without optional sunlight/ultra-violet light. While this seems to work on most ABS-type plastics there's always a risk that your yellowed plastic parts are of a different material which may be damaged by the treatment, so it would be a good idea to try it out on a small less-obvious area (underneath?) as a test. "Oxy-clean" is a product worth looking out for. |

A big Japanese name in this particular field - you see it a lot on the lenses of the lights on old Honda motorcycles for example (a bit like Lucas, but I suspect a lot more reliable!). They are still active now, there are plenty of Stanley LEDs listed in the RS catalogue.

I could not find much on this model either. Maybe it’s very rare and worth a fortune! Here is a pic of it.
