Thanks to Andy's generosity I now have a hygain rotator with a good shell but poor innards, and a hygain rotator with a shot shell and decent innards. Thanks to Hygains genius in not changing what isn't in need of change, everything fits everything. Its brilliant.

Now the games begin to make it work.

Oh, and yes,I joined the club.*

Does anyone know what the 8 pin plug is called? I know it's this...640077

CON, JONES,PLUG,8P,NO LATCH,CINCH
Non-locking 8-pin plug that fits into the back of the later model rotator control units with the 8-pin socket on the back. Applicable to the T2X, HAM series and CD-45II controllers.

But I'm wondering whether it has a name in the UK. Ebay beckons...

David,

That doesn't look like a Cinch-Jones socket to me, are you sure that's original? The backing plate looks homebrew.

I was going to say the same, looks military (especially considering the colour).

Probably used as it looks more robust and probably better in the waterproofing stakes than the original.

Terry,

I know but was trying to source locally.

Roger...I need to check that. My assumption is that it's original. It's not obviously a mod 'in the metal', but I will check further.

Hygaun call it an 8 pin but this is clearly 14 so you could be right.

On removing the plate it seems it would be just as easy to fit a new plug and socket. Or do pretty much as Hygain used to do, fit eight binding posts.

I had one of these in use in the '80's, the circuit diagram of the controller showed a metal rectifier! Mine actually used a silicon diode.

David,

Thinking about it further, if the connector on the rotator body is a female as per your photos wouldn't that mean the mating plug from the controller would have live pins at the top end?

It would. But the original hygain had bare wires!

That looks to me like a rework of the socket; have a look at MFJ [who now own HyGain/Telex] website for the official connectors/cables.

These guys - http://www.rotorservice.com/faqs.htm - have the deep-down details and can supply the various generations of Hy-Gain/Telex/CDE connectors/leads.

Many thanks to Andy, who previously owned the rotator...he sent me the actual plug complete with a metre of cable still soldered on! Will save me.hours of headscratching, probing and soldering.

Many thanks Andy. Now to clean all those bearings...

Now! Success. I took my two hygains apart and reassembled to male one good one.

Connected the test cable to the controller and ...ta daaa...it works. The only fly in the ointment is that the position indicator does not work. I suspect the meter is at fault (why? Probably because it seems logical). So I need to pull the controller apart again and see whats wrong there...I cant imagine what IS wrong there. I guess at a push I live without the indicator and just count...left 1,2, left, 3,4....

Anyway, great job so thanks for all the help guys.
