Default Roberts R250 tuning scale

I acquired a Roberts R250 special edition (yellow) recently.
I am at a loss to know what on earth has happened to the tuning scale...?!
The scale has now already been replaced from my spares, but a lot of head scratching has been done with regard the original. I initially thought it was backlit, and the lighting circuit had caused this, but there is none fitted, nor has there ever been. There is no damage inside the radio whatsoever. Not a jot.
In all my years of curveball issues with Roberts Radios, I have never seen anything like it.

Anyone?

I did think that it may have reacted to the sunshine, but there is no other evidence to support it - there's no colour bleaching to the case or control switches at all.

I would have expected other signs of sun related damage to the casing too.

Thank You both, I am now leaning towards chemical damage - the use of something inappropriate for cleaning plastic. Quite what it might be though boggles me.
